ZooChat Challenge UK 2013

I've worked out the minimum collections required, and they wouldn't take much effort for someone based in Kent ;) needless to say I'm not giving away which collections they might be, nor their number.

In any case, I don't much mind :) I've already got 2 cat lifeticks this year, so I am happy. If I get the other 2 cat lifeticks available in the UK this year, I'll be VERY happy even if I don't win the challenge.

I've pretty much hit that wall already, although I missed the fishing cat at Howletts.
Haven't been to Port Lympne yet but I do plan to visit other zoos this year.

I live best part of 100 miles from the Aspinalls, but visiting them once as is the maximum for anyone not local doesnt mean you'll see all the species available- as my 5+ experience of clouded leopard at Linton proves!

I didn't realise there were still fishing cats at howletts, their old enclosure was where the rope trail is when i went last april & didnt see a new one! Where are they now?

I would guess Wingham plus the Aspinalls wouldn't put you far away, but a week in the southwest & easy access to Edinburgh would give someone a good start maybe?!

A perfect run at the Aspinalls and Wingham bags 17 taxa, a perfect run at the collections I visited plus Edinburgh bags only 12. :p

For some reason i was sure Edinburgh would add more than 2 to your current list, but you've clearly done all the adding up.
I think most will hit that 'wall' at some stage once we've exhausted our local collections. My most frequent visits are to Whipsnade, which will add me nothing now!
It will not be until late March ( using up leave) & then summer that i can travel further afield.

The fishing cats are opposite the sumatran tigers. They're usually more active mid afternoon.

Saw them today (along with the siberian tiger cubs that moved from PL, when did they get there?)

Thanks, i'll have to look around better next time, dont know how i missed them!

A visit to Marwell yesterday brought my total to 10, though the poor weather meant the serval eluded me.

Linton 13/1 -

lion
tiger,
Snow leopard

Colchester 27/1-

Cheetah
Geoffroys cat
Leopard

Shepreth 2/2

Puma
Lynx

Marwell 9/2

Sand cat
Ocelot

Got number 11.....

Jaguar (Panthera onca) at Chester- 25/02/2013

In a first for the species in my experience, the serval at Chester was a no-show until 5 minutes after I left, according to the Zoochatters I had been with ;) so that shall have to wait.

A poor start for me - 2 visits to London Zoo and this weekend at Hamerton gives me;

Lion
Tiger
Serval
Cheetah

Jagaurundi and Oncilla no shows at Hamerton & rusty-spotted cat still off-show.....

Nice to know I have the full set lifetime wise though - although I've never , ever seen the Oncilla at Hamerton (I think it was Prague I saw one)....

Interesting the only time I've seen a Jungle Cat was at the now closed Basildon Zoo!

After a visit to Hamerton today i'm on 13, adding jaguarundi, oncilla & serval.

The oncilla eluded me on my previous visit, but on my 3rd effort of the day it was finally sitting outside.
Spent ages watching a very active tayra in the 'off show' enclosure, but sadly no sighting from distance of the rusty spotted cat in the neighbouring one!

strange, but i'm sure i saw them somewhere many years ago, it may have been Poole Park around 1979-80.

Indeed, Poole Park Zoo did have jungle cat about 1980.

Incidentally, I recall seeing the species at Chessington Zoo in the early 1960s.

Thanks for confirming this Tim, it's good to know my memory isn't playing tricks on me!

Not really the correct thread for this, but do you have a record of what else they held at that time? I remember 5 or 6 pumas in probably 3 seperate cages but not much else.

I'm still planning my year, I have loads of zoos I want to visit so it's tricky.

Got Whipsnade, Colchester, Marwell and Hamerton on my list so far. I just haven't had a chance to visit before.

This challenge is good motivation

Off to a fair start of 4 today following a visit to Dudley:

Tiger (Sumatran & Amur)
Asiatic lion
Snow leopard
Lynx (Carpathian and Eurasian)

Sadly, the Geoffroy's cat is still off show. Hoping to go to Chester for a long overdue visit in the next few weeks and tick off a few more then.
