I went to Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and managed to see the Pallas Cat, Lion, Amur Leopard and Clouded Leopard.

First time I've been for a few weeks and the clouded leopards are now back in the enclosure behind the Amur Leopard they get fed sometime in the last hour before closing time I've managed to get a glimpse off them a few times now at this time of day.

The jaguarundi's are not on show at the moment as they are having the enclosure refurbished.

Chester Zoo done today.

Jaguar
Tiger
Serval
Cheetah

Takes my total to 8 and a trip to Welsh Mountain Zoo later on in the week.

Snow Leopard and Margay seen today at Welsh Mountain Zoo.

First time in 3 visits I've managed to see the Margay.

Takes my total to 10

I'm on a small number (6):

Tiger
Lion
Leopard
Serval
Jaguar
Cheetah

I did YWP in February, wish I'd of waited until the Baboons arrived. :D Chester was as pleasant as usual (Nice to meet zg, Bongorob etc).

Managed to see four new species yesterday at Colchester:

2) Tiger
3) Leopard
4) Cheetah
5) Geoffroy's cat

So I've finally made a start with a few visits to Chester giving me 5.

Lion
Tiger
Cheetah
Serval
Jaguar

Well, its a start atleast ;-)

A spur-of-the-moment trip to Edinburgh has bagged me a few more :) the Golden Cats and the Scottish Wildcats were easy enough to see. The Clouded Leopard was a no-show, although I did manage to confirm she is still in the collection and pretty much only ventures out at night.

The really interesting thing I can report is that although the Margay are still offshow, I have learnt a) where they are kept and b) that according to one keeper I spoke to, the male in particular is visible from public areas on sunny days. The mesh, and the distance the enclosure has to be viewed at, means that although I think I did spot a margay, I cannot be sure enough to count it for this challenge. But if I do not get the species elsewhere, and these individuals do not go onshow, a return visit equipped with binoculars might be profitable!

So to conclude, my total has gone up by two, and is now 13 :)

Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at Paignton - 27/01/2013

Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) at Paignton - 27/01/2013

South African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Arabian Sand Cat (Felis margarita harrisoni) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Puma (Puma concolor) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Carpathian Lynx (Lynx lynx carpathicus) at Newquay Zoo - 29/01/2013

does the margay count though if it is off-display? You can see it from a public space...but it's not actually on show. I think that would need a Shorts adjudication.

Hehe, not that such an adjudication is needed yet :P

Argghhh, the responsibility.

This would count under the "as seen by Joe Public" rule. This also neatly avoids any potential dilemmas of having to decide what is on and off show and associated gray areas (for instance number of Howletts enclosures are in a bit of a middle area, visible but not really on show).

On that note (sorry to go OT) does anyone know what is in the enclosure behind the Clouded Leopard and Pallas cat?
Off the top of my head I can't remember if that's the same enclosure that is directly behind the cloudy or a different one.
I assume it's another clouded leopard (I think they may have 3 in separate enclosures) but I'm not sure

EDIT: Website says Howletts and Port Lympne have over 20 between them, wow.

From memory there are about 5 enclosures in that area, mostly, if not all holding clouded leopards. I've had more luck spotting them in some of those than the 'on show' one!

Thanks, I've had a bit of luck walking down beside the lions, no good for photos but nice to see them.

I have so many places I want to visit and I can't until the summer. It's really irritating.
I've never seen a jaguarundi, oncilla, sand cat or a few others...

It may be consolation that in my experience, sand cats are one of the showier small cat species, so when you go somewhere with the species you will hopefully have a decent chance.

Good to know, thanks. I'll probably be going to Marwell.

I think my list for the year is:

Colchester
Whipsnade
Paradise WP
Hamerton
Marwell

but that may change

Unexpected trip to Marwell today takes my total to 12

Clouded Leopard - Cotswolds (4th January)
Asiatic Lion - Cotswolds (4th January)
Pallas Cat - Cotswolds (4th January)
Amur Leopard - Cotswolds (4th January)

Margay - Welsh Mountain Zoo (4th April)
Snow Leopard - Welsh Mountain Zoo (4th April)
Sand Cat - Marwell (11th April)
Ocelot - Marwell (11th April)

The hare is slowly being worn down & my potential victory parade at Port Lympne was ruined by the snow on 25th March! I reckon there is another tortoise who hasn't revealed their total hiding somewhere though!?

Trip to Hamerton today takes my total to 14 now

Clouded Leopard - Cotswolds (4th January)
Asiatic Lion - Cotswolds (4th January)
Pallas Cat - Cotswolds (4th January)
Amur Leopard - Cotswolds (4th January)
Jaguar - Chester (2nd April)
Cheetah - Chester (2nd April)
Surmatran Tiger - Chester (2nd April)
Serval - Chester (2nd April)
Margay - Welsh Mountain Zoo (4th April)
Snow Leopard - Welsh Mountain Zoo (4th April)

Ocelot - Marwell (11th April)
Oncilla - Hamerton (12th April) - Took me a while to see it, but was worth the wait.
Jaguarundi - Hamerton (12th April)

I can officially enter now, as I have just come back from Chester Zoo! So...

Cheetah - 13/4/13 - Chester
Serval - 13/4/13 - Chester
Tiger - 13/4/13 - Chester
Lion - 13/4/13 - Chester
Jaguar - 13/4/13 - Chester

After my delayed trip to Port Lympne today (13/4/13), the Challenge is still alive....just!
I'm now on 23, after seeing
Margay
Fishing Cat
Pallas Cat
Caracal
Rusty Spotted Cat(on my return to the 1st cage it suddenly appeared & was very active, i watched it for some time)
It's ironic that on my best day ever at an Aspinall park, seeing all 13 of the other cat species(including the most active clouded leopards) and saw one cat at least in all but 2 enclosures, the one i needed to see most eluded me-Back Footed Cat !
