TWENTY THREE?! Nice going.

Maybe, but it's one short and although today was only a short visit( a 90 mile diversion off the m25 on route elsewhere), i live 100 miles from Port Lympne, so wont get to go back for some time! If someone gets lucky(& they have to be very lucky!maybe if the glass has been cleaned for the 1st time in 5 years !) then 23 is my lot!

After my delayed trip to Port Lympne today (13/4/13), the Challenge is still alive....just!
I'm now on 23

Whoa! Very impressive, I didn't expect the challenge to be almost-extinguished this early in the year.

I've never seen a Black-footed Cat in my three attempts/visits so you're not on your own there. Unless anybody get's the full set it looks like the trophy's heading your way. That said, there's a long time to 31st December so there may be a Tortoise or two still out there.

It all hinges on the pimpernel-like feline(s) in a rickety looking cage in Kent.:)

the one i needed to see most eluded me-Back Footed Cat !

But they are still held in the collection?

As i suspect most of us will only get 23 at the very most, due to the scarcity of leopard cats, I reckon the only way you have not already won it is if another species goes onshow to increase the overall target total, such as jungle cat ;) very well done pipaluk.

Probably, but it ain't over till the fat arbitrator says so.

Given I know there's a few well-traveled and tenacious zoo-nerds out there I'm not calling curtains on the challenge until 31st December (I would have said, "or unless Black-footed cats die or are gone out of" but TLD mentioned the possibility of a new species coming on show before the year-end which can't be ruled out).

And (which you shouldn't really start a sentence with) Leopard Cats are hardly much less scare than Asiatic Golden Cats, Rusty-spotted Cats, Jaguarundi and (especially) Oncilla:p. That said the Thrigby one(?) is getting on and if anything happens to it there does remain a very long haul (for most) to Galloway or Axminster(?) to spot (no pun intended) one.

That being my thinking - that although the species you mention are just as scarce, they are located a bit more centrally for the majority of Zoochatters. To use last year's challenge as an example, the black-footed cats are like the American Black Bear - tricky to see, but at a collection which can be reached without much trouble. The leopard cats are like the Polar Bear - located at collections which are hard to reach whether you have access to a car or not due to sheer distance.

Now on 12 after getting Clouded Leopard and Pallas Cat at Cotswold Wildlife Park, very happy to get Clouded Leopard out of the way as it saves me having to visit Thrigby just to see them!
Now on 14 after a visit to Hamerton on bank holiday monday,so have added Jaguarundi and Oncilla to the list!

Just a quick note for anyone thinking of going to try and get Rusty-spotted Cat at Hamerton, forget it they are off-show in an area of the park that is not viewable from any public area, although if you are lucky you may spot there new pair of Oncilla, through the Tiger enclosure!!

After my delayed trip to Port Lympne today (13/4/13), the Challenge is still alive....just!
I'm now on 23, after seeing
Margay
Fishing Cat
Pallas Cat
Caracal
Rusty Spotted Cat(on my return to the 1st cage it suddenly appeared & was very active, i watched it for some time)
It's ironic that on my best day ever at an Aspinall park, seeing all 13 of the other cat species(including the most active clouded leopards) and saw one cat at least in all but 2 enclosures, the one i needed to see most eluded me-Back Footed Cat !

For reasons of my having a first visit to Port Lympne in the coming weeks, a few questions being as you are the most recent visitor to the collection -

1) How showy, relatively speaking, are the margay at the collection?

2) How many rusty cat enclosures are there, and how close are they to the blackfooted cat enclosure?

3) Was the blackfooted cat enclosure actually still there and labelled?

I had no problem seeing the margay on my first visit to the enclosure , it was patrolling the front fence, as was the fossa in a nearby enclosure, i suspect they were waiti.g to be fed. This was late morning, but i didn't see either species later in the day, so i wouldn't describe the margay as particularly showy! The new map is worse than the old one, AD posted a copy of the old one in the gallery which has the cat locations on it & is still fairly accurate. The margay are still just before you reach the cafe and cheetah enclosure, with fossa & rusty spotted cat.
The other rs cat cage is down a side path in the woods, near the clouded leopards, which were very active incidentally.
The black footed cats are just along the path from the open top monkey & binturong exhibits. They were still labelled, but the only sign of possible life was a chicken lying on the inside of a window ledge, untouched by the look of it! An odd thing was a bowl of soapy water was left outside the door all day, perhaps someone had thought about cleaning the filthy windows and changed their mind!

Very nice indeed, you have been a real dark horse coming from behind!

Any pointers on seeing the black-footed cats and rusty spotted cats? Frankly at this stage I do not care I am doubtful to win, I just want the best chance at these two elusive ticks as possible ;)

Rusty Spotted Cat tends to make an appearance when the Fossa next door gets fed which today was just after 3. There is Rusty Spotted in an off show enclosure just to the right and further back which has less foliage in. We could see a cat in there but wasn't sure what it was until the keeper came along she said it was the son of the one on show. Wr also saw the other Rusty Spotted Cat that is on show in the woods by the monkeys.

The black footed cat I think we just gor lucky seeing them both although we were told our best chance was around 5 when they get fed. But we walked past the enclosure around 4 on our way back to base camp to see the big cats and there was one sat in the window of the left hand side enclosure poking there head out into the enclosure. Shortly after that we caught a glimpse of something in the other enclosure which we then running around on the ground.

We managed to see all at least 1 of all of the other cats except for the ocelot which evaded us!

I have definitely found having lots of patience, and paying several visits to the enclosures (especially later in the day) definitely helps.

Think that will be my lot for a while as its at least a 4 hour journey to the nearest Golden Cst.
