Well at least it's one i and probably at least 50% of people have zero chance of getting!

Well you could get it a lot easier if you went to that Welsh place but by all accounts you'd have to be pretty desperate to win. I don't know many (any?) people who have a good word to say about it!

I'm not that desperate to win! After having defeat snatched from the jaws of victory last year, anything is possible, but i wont be going to Wales or probably the Isle of Wight or Cornwall, so my chances are virtually nil! There is more chance of me going to Edinburgh & HWP i would think!

I remember last years bitter defeat, still smarting then?
Like you I feel I have no chance but I'm still keeping a total written down (just in case ;)) and you have managed two obscure species at Shepreth. Doubt many others are going to get crab-eating macaque or vervet! :p

Or White collared lemur unless they go to Linton! To be honest, it's only because they are my 2 nearest zoos that i've picked up those species (so visit both a couple of times a year when i have a few hours free), i wouldn't travel 200 miles to visit an equivalent collection!

I can see the logic behind that, the only way I've picked up grey mouse lemur and gelada are because of Dudley/BNC. Likewise I wouldn't be travelling out of my way for those two species if they weren't on my doorstep.

Incidentally I refuse to post my list until I've got the loris at BNC! :p

The Black Lemur I saw wasn't in the walk through it was in the larger of the 2 primate houses,in with a group of Ring-tailed Lemur and a Black and White Ruffed Lemur,as for the Collared they were in their normal spot a sleep on the far shelf in the first house on the left of the walk through!!!

I know which enclosure you mean, it only held the single ruffed and ring-tails last week, the ruffed has been seperated due to being bullied but there was definitely no black lemur in there then.

Subsequent to a long dry spell with no zoo visits, I have now hit the ground running thanks to a long zoo-going weekend with zoogiraffe :)

It is my neares collection holding primates and I have just visited .

Got 9 definites - chimpanzee , lar gibbon , hamadryas baboon , olive baboon , mandrill , grivet monkey , Japanese macaque , crab-eating macaque and black and white ruffed lemur .

The black mangabey eluded me . It is no longer where previously housed , with a black spider monkey . Think I could see where it is now housed ( no sign on house ) and could just about make out something black curled up in the corner through thick , not very clean glass , but could not be certain .

There is a single eulemur specimen housed with a ruffed lemur , looked closest to a female black , with pale tail , orange brown body fur and quite a bit of white on the head . The mesh used makes taking decent photos difficult , will check what I took and post anything that might help with identification . I notice it has previously been listed as common brown lemur , but not right colouring for that .

I'll take a look at it once photographs are up; I have a rapidly growing interest in Eulemur species :p

On that topic, incidentally, I have noticed that ZTL has not been updated to reflect the split of the Red Lemur (Eulemur rufus) and Red-fronted Lemur (Eulemur rufifrons), labelling everything in Europe as rufus - an odd omission, as this split was made at the same time as the macaco/flavifrons split which *is* reflected on ZTL.

As I happen to know that at least some of the rufus around in the UK *are* proven rufifrons, I intend to do a bit of research into the matter so we can hopefully work out which collections have which species.

@TLD, the rufus/rufifrons split is acknowledged in zootierliste as they list them all as rufus sensu lato, as it remains (largely) unknown what the exact origin is....

In which case, the default position should be rufifrons, as it is known that the vast majority originate from areas which are now classified as being home to this subspecies - the issue is working out the occasional straggler. The matter is discussed to some extent in the third edition of Lemurs of Madagascar, by Mittermeier et al.

That's not how sensu lato and sensu stricto work, though.

Remember they mean 'in the broader sense' and 'in the stricter sense', so in the case of a split taxon unidentified animals have to be listed as the original taxon 'sensu lato' - regardless of the probability this is correct.

So in this case, as the pre-existing taxon was rufus, they are rufus (sensu lato) until sorted out, and Zootierliste's listing is perfectly correct until (and unless) the animals get identified properly. :)

After a second trip to Twycross on Saturday we finally saw the red bellied lemur. They had moved enclosures.

44. Red-bellied lemur

I phoned Caehopkin monkey sanctuary this morning to enquire about the lemur housed with the black and white ruffed. I was informed she is indeed a very old female black lemur which means I need to edit our list although the total will remain the same. I was also informed they do have common brown lemurs however they are still in quarantine and not on show at this moment in time.

Respect for the integrity shown above in participating in the challenge. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing people involved in the challenge are trusting, trustworthy and not in need of any heavy handed monitoring or (proof) rules laid down by myself.
