It rather amuses me that Thylo has been in the country three short days, and is already two-thirds of the way to overtaking Pipaluk ;)

Never mind that what worries me is that he may pull in front of me, I just hope the 3 I picked up will be enough to keep him behind me. I will post them when I return home and not trying to use my phone for posting !

What amuses me more is that someone has travelled thousands of miles to visit such places as Rodbaston & Gentleshaw!! Very odd, they must be taking the challenge very seriously! I have a trip intended to Birmingham WCP, I may have to go to Rodbaston that day too now, as I was considering where else to go that day.

Well if you do those 2 just remember that signs are not always right !!!!!!!

Well how else was I supposed to pick up Ethiopian Eagle-Owl and two subspecies of Raccoon Dog?:p

Also mind you I'd only been here three days when I entered the challenge and have also visited London and Chester.

I'll just refer you to ZG 's post above! Were the signs right at those places?! If someone travelled thousands of miles as you have, there must be AT LEAST 50 places more worth visiting than Gentleshaw or Rodbaston surely?!!!

Personally I reckon Gentleshaw is *well* within the top 50 UK collections!

And I know what other collections Thylo has done since arriving, and is yet to do; I think no one will be able to quibble about his visiting worthwhile collections or not once his trip is over!

Well it might come 40 something I guess, but I reckon most of the 50 plus I've been to would beat it! I wouldn't bother travelling 150 miles to it let alone several thousand! I'd rather go to the Aspinalls, Edinburgh, HWP, Ywp, & plenty of others with no reptiles at all!! Aside from that Dave, what's your total so far?

At the time of my last update, only 40 :p though I just realised I completely forgot to update for Tropical World Leeds in late April so my total is actually slightly higher. Not done any other UK collections since then, which may surprise you!

Doing Chester tomorrow though so will hopefully pick a handful more.

I'm sure you'll pick up more than a handful!! Let's be honest there is only one person who will win this and it's not you, me or Thylo (unless he wants to miss half the decent UK zoos in favour of obscure aquariums & 2nd rate zoos just to boost his total by 1 or 2).. I have made no real effort to pick up 168 from 19 zoos so far. I could probably get 230 if I was desperate to try & win, but I doubt I'll get more than 190 at best! Of the other 10 plus zoos I visit, around half will add nothing.

Oh, it *will* only be a handful; I've got most of the Chester ones already from a visit in April.

And I think we've worked out Thylo *may* just about pull ahead of ZG come the end of his trip - and more or less all of the places he has yet to visit *are* decent collections :p

Well, we'll just have to wait & see, but my money is still on ZG, he has the rest of the year to increase his total. Looks like 2nd place may be beyond me though!

Yes that has been noted. The signs are not all correct and some have no signs at all, though I know my listings are correct since I'm currently traveling with someone who knows exactly what they're looking at.

That said, I have made one pretty big mistake. Number 34 should be European Pond Turtle, not Western! Wrote it down currently and it's signed I just made a mistake while posting.

Who says I'm not going to visit the Aspinalls, Edinburgh, HWP, and many other larger zoos? I'm not here to win the challenge (I don't expect to), I'm here to see the country, its native wildlife, meet some people, and visit some great collections. None of the zoos I'm doing are for the challenge, I'm just playing for fun as I go.

Trust me I'm not missing too many decent zoos, nor would I call any of the ones I've done second rate. I've been very impressed so far and any collection that can over double my owl lifelist (Rodbaston) or my parrot lifelist (Hayle) is pretty good in my book.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest you wouldn't be going to them. I'm glad to hear you will be visiting some top zoos despite them adding nothing to the challenge!

OK, so I was at Kew Gardens today, and in one of the glasshouses (the Princess of Wales Conservatory) unexpectedly saw a Water Dragon Lizard in the desert area (Kew website doesn't give species, but most likely Physignathus cocincinus). Reading up they are kept there as natural pest-control. My question is, can I count this towards my total? Kew isn't a zoo, but it does have a small aquarium in the Palm House basement, similar to the aquarium at the Horniman Museum, which would count. But, the lizard was in one of the plant conservatories, so not technically a display animal, but is definitely a captive exotic. So, a nice conundrum for our adjudicator :)
