Yes, the measure I'm using is simply based on the number of posts they had made as of the 16th anniversary date.

If I wanted to get a lot more sophisticated, I could do it as a running total based on the contribution-to-date on a daily basis - but that's an awful lot of calculation to do given we've been running for over 5,800 days!
 
48a. User status

  • Valid: account is fully active and the user can post (this number is shown as the "total users" count you see in the sidebar)
  • Invalid: account is suspended because the user either has not confirmed their email address; emails sent to them have bounced back as undeliverable; the user requested that their account be disabled; or they changed their email address but never verified it
  • Banned: account has been disabled because the user was either banned for spamming, or banned for rule violations. Note the percentage doesn't show on the pie chart - it is 1.9% of total user registrations.
  • Removed: accounts have been purged from the database because they were either invalid or banned and never posted. Purges happen only periodically, so over time more of the invalid and banned (because of spam) users will be removed.
Our removed figure is currently quite high because of a cleanup / purge I did prior to the migration to the new software back in 2016. Those were old users who had either never activated their account, or were banned - and had never posted. I think I may have also deleted a few old accounts who had never posted and hadn't been online in more than a couple of years too - as a way of freeing up some usernames.

The new system gives us a lot more flexibility in managing disabled/deactivated accounts, so I'm unlikely to perform a similar purge again.

If we break down the valid users and compare users who have posted vs those who haven't, we get the following:

  • Active: valid and has posted
  • Never posted: can post, but hasn't
The "Never posted" figure would be a lot higher if it weren't for all the "removed" users (users are only removed if they have never posted). Note that a lot of the "removed" users would not count as "Never posted" because a lot of them were not able to post because their account was not activated or had otherwise been disabled for various reasons.

We can also break down the invalid users:

  • Email bounced: we received notification from our email service provider that mail was permanently undeliverable to this user (ie was never a valid email address; email address is no longer valid; user has blocked us; user made a spam complaint against us; our email service provider blocks us from sending to that address)
  • Incomplete Registration: user never confirmed their email address after registering
  • Account Disabled: user voluntarily requested us to disable their account
  • Never logged in: user has never logged in again since registering and never completed registration
  • Email Changed: user changed their email address but did not confirm the new address

Stripped out the top level domain (TLD) so that yahoo.com and yahoo.com.au results (and all the other TLDs they use) are combined. Of course, this does not account for gmail vs googlemail and yahoo vs y7mail etc.

Nearly 33% of our members use Gmail.

Note that there is no grouping beyond alternatives names for the same location (eg "New York", "NY", "NYC", etc) - so Sydney AU is separate to both NSW AU and Australia.

I think there might be an error somewhere, as there are some massive discrepancies between some of those figures and the totals visible on the "Members" page; just in terms of the top ten, that page has the "top posts" as follows:

...and my computer tells me I have 23,181 posts, which is different from both Sim's and TLD's figures! (And that's my total on the same Members page which TLD got his figure from too ... ).

There seems to be some curious anomalies in the data - I'm wondering whether it is a holdover from when we migrated to the new software back in Oct 2016.

It's mostly only @snowleopard whose data seems to be significantly different to what's actually in the database. It's possible that somehow the data calculation made when we migrated from the old gallery software to the new gallery software was wrong.

I actually only just realised that the cache rebuilding tools don't adjust post counts like I thought it did - so if an old forum is deleted and there are threads in it, the user post counts aren't updated and will show incorrect information. Snowleopard's post count is being shown nearly 10,000 posts higher than it actually is - so I'm speculating that this is related to the large number of photos and photo comments he has uploaded in the past and perhaps the post count calculations were affected by this during the migration.

Anyway - I have run an updated cache rebuild routine which recalculates posts based on what is actually in the database and tweaked a couple of other settings and now the figures we can see in the Notable Members page do accurately reflect what I'm seeing in the database.

I will update the top posters stats above - there are some minor updates based on the tweaks I made to the way posts are counted.

I'll also put on my todo list to include comment counts in user profiles - I think the current forum software treats comments as second class citizens where on a site like ours they should be just as important.

Don't forget that the stats above are as of 19 Oct 2019.

Also, I've just tweaked the way some of the post counts are calculated - there were several forums which weren't previously counted but now are, so it's more reflective of what users have actually posted.

So while most people's post counts shown in TLD's post above should be higher than what they are in my stats - because TLD's post shows current post counts, while mine shows as of Oct last year - now that I've made those tweaks, there are some members (mostly moderators) whose post count has actually increased quite a bit in both cases.

Comparing what the Notable Members page says with what I'm seeing in the database, I'm now confident that the data is accurate.

I should clarify something about this data.

With the old gallery software, the modifications I made saw the photo description set as the first post in the photo "thread" so that people could then reply to it.

When I migrated to the current gallery software, I copied that first post to the photo description field in the gallery, but also copied it to the first comment made - since this is how it previously worked. These comments also counted towards a user's overall post count - since they were literally posts that started the comment thread.

As a result, any photos uploaded before Oct 2016 will have both a description and a comment made which are identical. What's more - users who uploaded those older photos will have seen their comment counts rise in line with the number of photos they uploaded.

So @snowleopard has a very high comment count mostly because he has a very high photo count and every one of his descriptions on photos he uploaded before Oct 2016 (and pretty much every photo had a description), will also count as a comment.

It's not ideal - but it's also not wrong - it was done this way to maintain consistency with the way the old gallery worked. But either way, it is different to the way it works now. A user uploading a photo to the gallery and adding a description will not automatically have a comment added.

Anyway - that's why those users who were members on the old site and uploaded a lot of photos there will have a much higher comment count overall.

It makes me twitch a bit that we don't have nice consistent data - but I'm not sure there's a better way of managing it at this point.

I guess I could go back and delete all those first comments that exactly match the photo descriptions to make things more consistent? I will see how things work once we get the upgrade done later this year and look at tidying things up a bit then.

Interesting. I'm not sure why but I identify much more with London than the UK, which actually, on second thoughts, isn't too surprising given the relative uniqueness of the capital within its country and certain political differences. I wonder how many of the people who said UK live in London and similarly for other countries vs. their capitals/biggest cities.

If I haven't calculated wrongly I think I will be on an average of 5.6 a day when I pass a year in 4 days :)
