I've voted keeper although technically I'm an animal trainer, but still I have to do keeper work anyways.

That interests me :p
Where do you work?

I'm normally in Portugal (zoomarine), but I do some work in the US, and some other countries in Europe setting up and presenting shows.

After receiving that degree in Zoology Mario, you may even shoot for a curator position one day. Or just imagine, maybe even the future Los Angeles Zoo Director! Wouldn't that be something? The sky's the limit!!!

Yeah, that would be awesome. I would really want to be the curator of mammals at the LA Zoo one day, but I would not want to be the director. There is a lot of politics involved, and I don't like that.

I also heard that the LA Zoo has a curator that is in charged of all the historical records at the zoo. I don't know the exact name of the position or what they really do, but I would also like to have that position.

Probably Michael Dee, he's been around since I was a kid and I'm now 54!

Not a keeper, but I intend to be one sometime. I have a decade and a bit of animal experience with not only my own pets, but volunteering at the animal shelter here. Just need the $$$ to get into training, though . . .

I can't vote on the poll.. perhaps not enough posts? Anyway, there wasn't a place to vote for former keeper anyway :-) I worked as a Great Ape and large carnivore keeper for over eight years.

Not yet but I intend to be one, should be graduating with a degree in Animal Biology next year so if anyone knows of any UK posts let me know!

I'm a Keeper. Have been for 12 years. Started straight from school but i did cheat as it was my dads little place.

Dont you work at Gentleshaw Trigger?
Ive wanted to go there or quite some time to see your puma, do you still have the caracals?
Thanks for any info :)

im not a keeper yet but im doing my national diploma in animal mangement and done various work experience at whipsnade zoo including volunteer work

Just completed my master in accountancy, why i'm here, noone knows...

Something went wrong with my career planning, and now i'm stuck as an assistant accountant :)

Still got my eyes peeled for a zoo that needs an elephant keeper with an accountancy diploma, as soon as i see one, i'll apply :D

Reminds me of this Monty Python sketch. Perhaps you could work your way up through banking? :)

Lion tamer sketch

Classic - who'd have thought it would be quite so pertinent!

Edit: perhaps one should add that a lot of zoo people are very versatile. In fact when I think about it I know of an accountant who supplies domestic animals to a zoo, so these things don't have to be mutually exclusive!

Not a keeper, I would love to be, but the only thing is that you need to much math in order to do an animal science degree in Canada. I am excellent in the science feild though. However I am doing a coop at the Toronto Zoo or as other people might call it an unpaid internship for 5 months.

In Australia someone that has any practical experience with animals is more likely to be employed by a zoo then someone that has completed the zoology degree at university. The course to become a qualified zookeeper is at I suppose a trade school, similar to electricians, builders etc called TAFE. (Technical and Further Education). All you need is to have completed year ten, and be able to work in a zoo (either voluntarily or employed) to gain practical experience.

Im 16 right now but have got my eyes set on the Ueniversity of Toronto and then to Toronto Zoo I go.

Do research now on what you should have and what the grades are you need! Good luck with everything and keep it up! I was going towards that same path but I decided to change the direction.
