Indeed. My answer was based on certain sea snakes using dermal photo reception to determine whether their tails are concealed or not; great fact even if it’s not the right one!
 
Photoperiodism, detecting whether it is concealed, camouflage, sidereal behaviour, thermal regulation; I’ve tried examples of most of these, none of which seem to require spots.
 
None of those, Tetzoo Quizzer. As no other Zoochatters seem to be taking part, put all the words, including the word 'black' from the question into an internet search.
 
Just checked, this is R and A question 9. It took so long as I wasn’t thinking of vestigial eyes as eye spots! Anyway, let’s make this an easy one; name a Lazarus species of amphibian that has benefited from ex-situ conservation.
