Thanks, Tim

The type specimen of which species was shot by a man who said that the "evil" side of his personality was due to being subjected to severe physical abuse by a sadistic schoolmaster?

That's right, Tim

Meinertzhagen claimed to have discovered several bird species, but at least some of his 'specimens' had been stolen from the Natural History Museum in London.

It's your go

Never heard of the guy, just looked him up and he had a very interesting life both in ornithology and in his work as an intelligence officer, no doubt he did have an evil side though.

Anyway, interesting reference.

Sorry that's not the answer I was thinking of.

Whilst London Zoo did receive its first babirusa in 1841, I wouldn't describe that as a species that "has seldom been kept in European zoos"; numerous previous holders are listed on ZooTierListe.

Yes, indeed. Babirusa must have been well known enough to be included in the ranges of model animals produced by toy manufacturers in France, Germany and Austria, if not the UK. Many of these production items were based on current zoo spp, even sometimes on individual animals.
