The female Adactylidium mite lives out her brief life as a parasite on a thrip egg. A male offspring develops in her body with a few females. Each female mates with their brother as they moult,
feed and grow. Their dying mother becomes a swollen bag of discarded shells and faeces,
which her daughters rip open and devour from within. The male cannot move or feed on
his own, so he dies in his mother's remains almost instantly, while his pregnant sisters scatter to find their own thrip eggs.
