Zoochatters who’ve seen (a) proboscis monkey(s)

I visited hundreds of zoos in my lifetime without ever seeing a Proboscis Monkey until very recently. When I visited Bronx Zoo (USA) in 2008, the species was long gone. I saw a lot of primates on the day that I toured Apenheul (Netherlands) in 2019, but alas no Proboscis Monkeys were left there either.

It took me a lifetime of visiting more than 600 different zoos until I finally saw my first Proboscis Monkeys in Southeast Asia last month, and I ended up seeing them at 8 zoos in 11 days! I was on a 3-week trip with @twilighter to 4 Asian nations.

All my Proboscis Monkey sightings occurred between August 11th and August 21st.

Here's my list:

1- Singapore Zoo (Singapore) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 11
2- Taman Safari III Bali (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 14
3- Surabaya Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 15
4- Taman Safari II Prigen (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 15
5- Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 16
6- Taman Safari I Bogor (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 19
7- Ragunan Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 20
8- Faunaland Ancol (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 21

Thanks to your comment I realised that we saw the spieces at total of 8 zoos! Just want to add that the most impressive exhibit was at Surabaya, where one of their big groups live on a enormous island together with herds of Bawean Deer.

Did you see any wild proboscis monkeys?

Did you see any wild proboscis monkeys?

No, we didn't. However, while walking around zoos we saw wild primates such as Southern Pig-tailed Macaques, Dusky Langurs, White-thighed Surilis and hundreds of Crab-eating/Long-tailed Macaques. All totally wild and hanging around various zoos. We also heard incredibly loud, wild gibbons at Zoo Melaka (Malaysia), but frustratingly we never saw them. Many of the zoos in Southeast Asia are set in jungles, so seeing Sambar Deer and Great Hornbills (which we did) is the norm for the keepers and visitors there.

I saw the last one at Apenheul Primate Park, also quite likely the last one ever in Europe, shortly before it moved back to Singapore.

Multiple wild on the Kinabatangan river (Sabah Borneo) and captive at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park and Ragunan Zoo.
