Zoochatters who’ve seen (a) proboscis monkey(s)

I've seen them at Bronx Zoo in the 80s and 90s. Then none for a while until a 3.5 week, 10 country, zoo trip I took in 2018 where I saw them at both Singapore Zoo and Taman Safari Bogor.

Do you reckon we'll ever see one in Europe or the US again? I know they're hard to take care of and they probably wouldn't suit another climate, but what else is stopping them from going overseas?

Saw a female at Twycross in 1984. Also visited in 1973 but don't remember them on that occasion.

I did visit Bronx in 2003 when they may have still had some, and almost certainly would have recognized them from documentaries, but I guess I did not realize how rare what I was seeing was and I have no memory of them or they had just left at the time of my visit (summer 2003). I do remember seeing the langurs and otters together in the former proboscis enclosure but I am unsure if the proboscis were part of that mix or if my langur memory is from a later visit in 2006 (I'm fairly certain it was both visits though).

Chalk me down as a maybe, I suppose. Don't get old if you can help it.

For me:

Bronx Zoo in the late 1990s.
Singapore Zoo in 2019 and 2020.
Yokohama Zoorasia in 2022.

I just did a search for Proboscis Monkey photos in the gallery. There were 13 pages of photos, taken by (by my count) 48 members.

I have seen a big breeding group of proboscis monkeys in Yokohama Zoological Gardens "Zoorasia" near Tokyo, Japan. This is similar climate as big parts of Western Europe and the USA. The key was keeping them inside during the winter months. So, they only have their group on show during summer. It was also my first encounter with this species, and seeing the big adult male make his impressive 'roars' right in front of my eyes was deeply impressive and surprisingly scary.

I thought replicating their diet was more of a challenge than climactic conditions, as proboscis monkeys are specialized to subsist mostly off of mangrove leaves.

I reckon with heated indoor rainforest exhibits now an enclosure could be on the cards. A really realistic exhibit with free flying birds with a path running through. Waterfalls, trees and a river with various south east asian animals in separate enclosures. Proboscis monkey, various types of gibbon, malayan tapir, bornean orangutan, sumatran tiger, sun bear, binturong etc. Similar to the eden project in Cornwall but with animals.

Ive seen Proboscis Monkeys in:

- Bronx Zoo (1983)
- Yokohama "Zoorasia" (2019) this is the 3rd Zoo in Yokohama, Japan
- Singapore Zoo (2022)
- Batu Secret Zoo, Indonesia (2022)
- Taman Safari Indonesia II , Prigen (2022, 2023)
- Lembang Park & Zoo, Indonesia (2022)
- Surabaya Zoo, Indonesia (2022, 2023)

Surabaya Zoo is by far the best zoo for lovers of Proboscis Monkeys. This zoo has a long tradition of keeping an breeding this species. There are currently around 40 (!) Proboscis Monkeys in Surabaya Zoo (my guess) in 2 groups of which the bigger one roams free through the zoo! You can watch Proboscis in their natural behaviour in Surabaya Zoo better (closer and more comfortable) than in the wild.

So many lucky folks in this thread. I saw a taxidermied one at the Natural History Museum in Manhattan and I think that's the closest I'll ever come to seeing one! At least that's there for anyone who wants to get a look at their anatomy up close.

For quite a long time (considering my age) I’ve been really interested in the wonderful, but also oddly looking proboscis monkeys. I’ve been lucky enough to see two individuals in Apenheul (Netherlands) in 2015. I’m really interested to know which people have seen this species, how many individuals, where and when. And if you have anything else to say about them, please go ahead!
In 2000 I was lucky to go on a trip to Indonesia and Borneo was part of it. On the small river boat we were being toured around we came across several troops of Proboscis monkeys. I think I was more thrilled to see those than the wild orangutans. Latter on the same trip we spent a few days at the Singapore Zoo where I saw them on exhibit.

I saw Proboscis Monkeys at Lok Kawai Wildlife Park in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo in around 2015, I believe they're still held.

Saw a female at Twycross in 1984. Also visited in 1973 but don't remember them on that occasion.
I remember seeing Proboscis Monkeys at Twycross in the early 1970s - I think it was a family group. I don't know if they bred a second generation.

I’ve seen them this month in Singapore Zoo, and in the Zoo attached to Taman Safari. It’s possible I also saw them (Apenheul?) back in the 80s

I visited hundreds of zoos in my lifetime without ever seeing a Proboscis Monkey until very recently. When I visited Bronx Zoo (USA) in 2008, the species was long gone. I saw a lot of primates on the day that I toured Apenheul (Netherlands) in 2019, but alas no Proboscis Monkeys were left there either.

It took me a lifetime of visiting more than 600 different zoos until I finally saw my first Proboscis Monkeys in Southeast Asia last month, and I ended up seeing them at 8 zoos in 11 days! I was on a 3-week trip with @twilighter to 4 Asian nations.

All my Proboscis Monkey sightings occurred between August 11th and August 21st.

Here's my list:

1- Singapore Zoo (Singapore) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 11
2- Taman Safari III Bali (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 14
3- Surabaya Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 15
4- Taman Safari II Prigen (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 15
5- Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 16
6- Taman Safari I Bogor (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 19
7- Ragunan Zoo (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 20
8- Faunaland Ancol (Indonesia) – Proboscis Monkey – 2024 - August 21
