Positive news for European ex situ conservation.

Worrying though to learn that the illegal trade in this CITES I regulated species continues unabatted.
 
New at Karlsruhe, behind the scenes a breeding-station for Orange-crested cockatoos has been build ( FB ) :

Neu im Karlsruher Zoo: Hinter den Kulissen ist eine Zuchtanlage für die bedrohten Orangehaubenkakadus gebaut worden. Über die Artenschutzstiftung Zoo Karlsruhe werden bereits Freilandprojekte der ZGAP (Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten und Populationsschutz e.V. - ZGAP) für diese seltene Papageienart unterstützt. Jetzt sollen die Orangehaubenkakadus auch im Karlsruher Zoo gezüchtet werden. Finanziert wurde die Anlage durch die Vogelfreunde Achern und Volieren & Tiergehegebau Mönning. Herzlichen Dank! Zoodirektor Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt erklärt im Video die neue Zuchtanlage.

At Karlsruhe a Scarlet macaw "Douglas" died at an age of at least 51 years. The bird first lived at Malmö and came 2016 to Karlsruhe.
Douglas became some kind of "celebrity" when it was part of one of the TV-movies from Pippi Longstocking which was made in 1970.
 
So sad. Remember the Pippi-Movies (german-swedish production) too. Oh those good old days. And that was quality, while others had and have to grow up with teletubbies, transformers and other rubbish

Nostalgia goggles much? Teletubbies is for the absolutely youngest audience and not meant to appeal to older viewers in any way, so they can't really be compared. I'll agree that Transformers isn't that interesting and is mostly just a merchandising ploy, but there has been many high-quality kids' shows from the 1980's and 'til now.

Back to topic: I didn't actually know Douglas (one of the few zoo animals whose name I can remember) had moved to Karlsruhe. Hope he had a good long life.
 
No, it doesn't. Did I write anything about the age of the audience? I just wrote about the grow-up-phase which includes the entire childhood.
However, I absolutely agree that there are INTERNATIONAL KNOWN/SPREAD high-quality kids'shows from the eighties (e. g. The Wonder Years), but from nowadays (2010+)? If so, I kindly ask for a few examples.

Backt to topic as well: Any news about the scheduled Orang-Utan exhibit that should be the temporary home for the chimps?
 
On the same day as "Douglas" died, another famous animal died:

"Rani", the 63-year-old female Asian Elephant collapsed in her stable and was euthanized after unsuccessful efforts to get her back on her legs.

Now, there are two female elephants remaining in the elephant and hippo house.
 
The Zoo Karlsruhe has a long tradition in keeping Sea-lions, the first being kept in 1013. It lasted till the 1060s before the first young were bred and now-a-day the species is bred regulary at Karlsruhe. Today just another pup was born :).

Pretty interesting that they kept Californian sea lions before America was even "discovered" ;)
