ZOOM Erlebniswelt ZOOM Erlebniswelt - Gelsenkirchen news

According to Facebook, the new hyenas have now arrived: Akia and Asali, two sisters born last year at Beekse Bergen/Netherlands. They are currently still behind the scenes for quarantine. I wonder if they are planning on getting a male eventually or just want to keep a female bachelor group, the post doesn't mention it.

On the 20th of September female Eurasian elk (Alces alces alces) Jette was euthanised due to age related problems. She was born in Tierpark Hellabrunn on the 16th of May 2009 and arrived at Zoom Erlebniswelt in 2010. During her life she gave birth to a total of 2 pair of twins. Currently the zoo only has a male, who will hopefully be paired to another female soon.

Lion cub triplets were born early October:

German zoo presents 3 lion cubs, 5 weeks after birth

Meet Jamila, Kumani and Malaika.

A zoo in the western German city of Gelsenkirchen proudly presented on Monday three female lion cubs born in early October.

The cubs played under the watchful eyes of their mother, Fiona, who was brought to the Zoom Erlebniswelt zoo in Gelsenkirchen two years ago from a zoo in Sweden along with her sister.

In March 3-year old male Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) was send to CERZA Lisieux, where he will live in a single sex group. He was born on 15th of February 2018 in Zoom Erlebniswelt.

At the end of March the zoo received one adult male and around 5 juvenile Chinese stripe-necked turtles (Mauremys sinensis) from Zoo Leipzig, because at the time the aquarium/terrarium building in Zoo Leipzig was being renovated. The zoo hopes (when the juveniles are a bit older) to introduce them to the already present females ultimately resulting in offspring.

In April an Ankole Longhorn was born.

Last week two domestic reindeer were born, on Monday Greta gave birth to a female (Gwen) and on Saturday Psycho gave birth to a male.

This year a total of 3 domestic reindeer were born, the last one was a male.

According to the zoo's facebook page, the last spotted hyena will leave the zoo soon and is headed to Planckendael/Belgium to contribute her valuable genes to the EEP (I wonder why they waited so long, as far as i know, Gelsenkirchen only had female hyenas the last couple years). However, the species will still be kept as a new pair of hyenas is coming from the Netherlands (no info from which zoo(s) however).
At the start of this year the other female Lubaya was euthanised.

In July 3 Common elands (Tragelaphus oryx) were born.

Earlier this month, polar bear Lara gave birth to two cubs, unfortunately the first one died shortly afterwards. The second one seemed fine at first, but has now also died. :(

New species for the zoo: A male slender loris (Loris lydekkerianus nordicus) now lives in the refurbished former bali mynah exhibit in the tropical hall. His name is Simi and he came from Zoo Frankfurt, where he was born in 2020. They expect a female from London Zoo eventually to form a breeding pair.

Two female Spotted thick-knees (Burhinus capensis) arrived from Wuppertal and can be seen in a (new?) aviary in the African area. Other new bird species are supposed to follow eventually.

Does someone have any pictures of the Schildkröten-Garten in ZOOM? Turned out I completely missed this enclosure on my visit. Now I do wonder what it looks like.

I haven't photographed the exhibits, but it's nothing too fancy. It's quite ducked away on a small path left of the entrance, many people miss it. It's basically an outddor enclosure for spurred tortoises (and maybe some others), a small house with indoor enclosures for e.g. box turtles (not accessible, can be looked into) and a pond for sliders.

Visited ZOOM for the first time in a little over a year today. Not too much to report, though. The cape thick-knees are in the former genet enclosure, the genets are gone or behind the scenes (I had never actually seen them anyway, but still sad).
I saw the young chimpanzee as well as the lions. Plus I noticed at least two young sitatungas, hadn't realized the group had become this large, I counted 13 animals at least.
The north american porcupines seem to be gone from the beaver enclosure, only seen and signed with the skunks now.
