ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2023

I expect that some dolphinariums will shift towards manatees, as the keeping of dolphins is increasingly outlawed in European countries (including mine).
For example a Floridian/Caribbean-themed lagoon with manatees would look good in Antibes if they get rid of dolphins (and it is much more fit than the former polar bear enclosure, in one of the warmest places of France !).

Pairi Daiza will join the fray within 2 years, but Beauval needs more then that :p

Has that been confirmed or are you speculating? It would be very them, though, and I’m surprised they haven’t already got them :p

Aren’t they already phasing out polar bears?

Am I right in thinking Loro Parque are trying desperately to obtain the Florida subspecies directly from the United States?

Marineland get rid of its Polar Bears in 2021. I talked about the former Polar Bear enclosure.
However, their enclosure looked bad, even if one doesn't take the local climate in account. It consisted basically in a narrow stripe of rocks with a deep but small pool and a grotto filled with ice piles.
Arguably the worst bear enclosure to be conceived after the 2000s in the Western world.

I don't know what's happening in Loro Parque, but the import of animals from the Floridian subspecies in Europe doesn't look like a priority, as they remain relatively numerous in the wild, and maintained in a lot of US refuges and marine parks.
It's better to have a stable and sufficiently large population of South American representents of the species in a large range of zoos throughout Europe to avoid inbreeding and/or overpopulation, and perhaps ponctual transfers with Central/South American and Asian parks that hold this animal.

They are confirmed for the new tropical house.

Not Loro Parque, but Bioparc Fuengirola was supposedly planning that.

Thanks for confirming this for me!
Apparently, the Florida manatee thing in Fuengirola was because the EEP for the Antilleans didn't seem to find the exhibit plans as adecuate... But I'd leave it just as a rumour. If I remember correctly Fuengirola isn't aiming for manatees right now.

Thanks - have to say not sure if they’d have enough space!

Hagenbeck would be a strong contender :oops:
I don't know personally Hamburg Tierpark but given the pics I see on Internet, their Polar Bear exhibit looks like a remnant of the Hagenbeckian era, so it belongs largely to History (even if it's a bad exhibit for bears).
Instead the Marineland enclosure has been built from nothing in the late 2000s.
Now it has been repurposed for Humboldt Penguins, that is, at least, better for animal welfare. But the strong fences, the grotto and the heavy trapdoor look very strange for these birds given their needs and the low level of risk they may cause to the public in case of escape or human intrusion.

Miscellaneous news from Beauval :
  • a young male Yellow-knobbed Curassow Crax daubentoni (that hatched a few weeks ago) will probably be transferred in Beauval from his birthplace (Asson Zoo), where he will be paired with a female (Log in to Facebook)
  • the South American Coatis have been transferred in the South American aviary, after months of preparation. However, they aren't currently on show, they will go in their definitive enclosure within a few weeks (seen on Howtank forum/chat)
  • Mr Marc Ancrenaz, from the NGO Hutan (that is involved on rainforest protection in Malaysia), will give a conference in Beauval on 5th January 2024. He went already a couple of times in Beauval in the past for conferences on conservation.

Im going by pictures but this doesn’t look as awful as others are making out. The Hagenback one is awful and is barely a decade old. They should have known better.

Some pieces of news from Beauval :
  • the South American Coatis have finally been introduced in the South American aviary, after months of preparation. They start to discover their new exhibit, shared with Giant Anteaters and Colombian Spider Monkeys, plus various birds (Ducks, Cattle Egrets...) that hang around...
  • a female Lowland Tapir has joined the Zoo, she will be introduced to the remaining male who remained alone since this summer ;
  • the young male Lowland Gorilla BANJOKO has finally been transferred in Apenheul (Netherlands).
Sources : Howtank forum/chat and Apenheul Facebook account.

The walkway above the petting farm (between the Elephant enclosures and the Chinese zone) has just been covered.

Some news from the very last days of 2023 :
  • 3 Humboldt Penguins hatched between mid-November and mid-December ;
  • the male Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo TIRRIKEE has been temporarily placed off-show to allow the gradual separation of the female YINGWIE with her [their] offspring, the young male NEWAK ; TIRRIKEE will probably be back on show in the near future ;
  • the Snow Leopard pair has finally access to its main enclosure by night (that's unusual with the cats and most carnivore species in Beauval, that really remain in special quarters by night, for safety and cleanliness reasons).

Sadly the male Fishing Cat EOS has passed away at the age of 15 (an advanced age for this species). (seen on Howtank forum/chat)

8 False Gharials have been transferred to La Ferme des Crocodiles in Southern France.
Ferme aux Crocodiles : huit faux-gavials de Malaisie sont arrivés à Pierrelatte

Contrarily to that I wrote this autumn, the Giant Argus are still (or back ?) in the Indonesian aviary. (seen of Facebook account of Didy : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=Beauval.Didy&set=a.749037037261880)
