ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2024

The EEP populations of the Mishmi takin (B. t. taxicolor) and the Golden takin (B. t. bedfordi) will both be managed towards insurance populations. The population of Sichuan takin (B. t. tibetana) will be phased out in EAZA to make space for the other subspecies.

Takin EEP » EAZA
Right! I do think they should not phase out, but export all the Sichuan takin (tibetana) to AZA zoos in USA and Canada.

Which are all AZA bloodline related so the added value from a genetic point of view would be limited if I understand well.
Of all the takin subspecies, the Sichuan is the one with best founder basis even though it is fully satisfactory. Both Mishmi and golden are based on less than 5 founders if I'm not mistaken.

I'm concerned the Mishmi get slowly replaced as judged less attractive due to the colour.

A couple of changes in the bird quarters near the Southern entrance (reported by JoJo from Howtank forum/chat) :
  • Purple-naped Lory and Salmon-crested Cockatoo are no longer mentioned on the signage of the Indonesian aviary, instead there's a panel about Major Mitchell's Cockatoo (a strange choice given the entirely Australian distribution of this bird) ;
  • Red-crested Touracos have been transferred in the Lovebird/Vulturine Guineafowl aviary ;
  • the White-naped Pheasant Pigeons have been transferred in the Papuan aviary.

Some other news from Beauval :

- the newly hatched Bearded Vulture chick (who hatched on Feb. 20th 2024) will be transferred to Goldau Zoo (Switzerland) when fledged, then eventually rewilded in the Swiss Alps.

- the female White Tiger ASHA has been placed in backstage, as she didn't do well with the other female (the younger SUSHI, born in Beauval in 2018) who shared her former enclosure.

The Bearded Vulture chick has received the name of PARADISO, and has been transferred today to Goldau Zoo in Switzerland. It will be reintroduced in the wild on June 2nd, with 2 other fledglings that hatched in Spain and Austria.

Some recent news reported by Antoine on Howtank forum/chat :
  • the Steppe Eagles briefly displayed in the former Fishing Cat exhibit have already been replaced by Steller's Sea Eagles ;
  • at least one Golden Takin is on public display ;
  • there's new signage on "Conservation Bridge" (the footbridge above the Red Kangaroo enclosure) that replaces the old kakemonos.

There's a temporary cartoon exhibit about the role played by zoos in worldwide conservation in the picnic area near the Southern entrance.
Et si vous profitiez de votre pause pique-nique… - Beauval Actus
I remember seeing this comic series when I visited the gift shop of the comic book museum of Brussels. It looked impressive with the book featuring extinct species from the holocene (?) era instead of the ever so popular mesozoic animals. I was a bit miffed because I had a gut feeling that this will never get translated to English.
