ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2025

Some news from Beauval, reported on the Zoos newsletter and on Howtank forum/chat :
  • The last Matschie's Tree Kangaroo (the male KOMBA) has passed away on Jan. 17th, 2025 at the age of 24. He was the last of his kind in Europe, and remained in backstage for years as a geriatric animal. Nonetheless he broke the record of life expectancy for his species (!).
  • The young male Koala UKI died too, from illness.
  • More cheerful news with some births : 1 Radiated Tortoise, 1 Capybara, 3 Axis Deer, 1 Asian Small-clawed Otter and 1 Mhorr Gazelle.

Another nice species that we lost in the European zoos. 24 is very nice for a tree kangaroo I guess.

The Otter kit born on Dec 13th is a boy, it's the first offspring of the young pair that shares the Binturong enclosure for less than a year.

Otherwise the old Indian Porcupine enclosure has been rebuilt, and the bird nursery has been revamped.

Some miscellaneous news from Beauval, albeit not genuinely recent (dating for some months, for some of them) in most cases :
  • birth of 0.1 Guereza Colobus on Oct. 4th, 2024 ;
  • arrival of Common Emerald Doves in the Bird House in 2024 (but this species has been kept there in the past, at least until the late 2010s) ;
  • the Luzon Bleeding-heart Doves of the Philippine aviary have been transferred to the nearby Indonesian aviary ; the "Philippine" aviary hosts now Banksian Cockatoos (!) instead of the Philippine and Citron-crested Cockatoos that lived once in this aviary (they are probably in the backstage). It seems that there has been behavioral issues with the dwellers of this aviary, that looks nearly empty for a couple of years, unlike the other themed aviaries that went refurbished in the same time ; every time I see at best a lone cockatoo, plus a shy pheasant or dove. I would prefer this aviary would be rather dedicated to the sole Philippine Cockatoos, that are CR in the wild, and whose conservation in situ is supported by Beauval, that runs too the EEP for this species.
(reported on Howtank forum/chat by Juliette, Anthony and JoJo + personal signage-based sightings for the Cockatoos in the Philippine aviary)

We have a render of the new "Rocs de Dodoma" enclosure and opening date (5 Avril)

(It's curious see in the render killspringer instead of Kirk's dik-dik, maybe future species...)

Zoo de Beauval
Maybe later ?
It took several years to get a pair of Yellow-backed Duikers from the US, so Dik-diks may be used to fill the space before a further Klipspringer import.

Here's the full list of the expected species for the new African small mammal zone "Les Rocs de Dodoma" :
  • Rock Hyrax (1.2)
  • Kirk's Dik-dik (1.2)
  • Southern Dwarf Mongoose (7.2)
  • Indian Porcupine (2.4), the sole non-African species of this zone, indeed I expected the arrival of Crested or South African Porcupines and the departure of the Indians (that used to live near the old Big Cat quarters for years and years...).

I've curiosity now, because the old enclosure is being rebuilding... let's see what the park is gonna give us next months (maybe indian porcupine will be in this enclosure until the old one will be completely refurbished again and then will arrive african porcupines)

I think that the separation from the public is not appropriate for having klipspringers.

I think that the fact that they appear in the image is more a mistake by their creator due to lack of knowledge than a possibility for the future.

I hope they can return to Europe, Bioparc Valencia and its exhibition adapted to them, I would appreciate having them again.

About the old porcupine enclosure, there are rumours about the arrival of an American small mammal species, probably a rodent or a small carnivore.
