ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval News

Many Thanks. Do you know which of the Madrid boys is coming to Beauval?

My information seems wrong now (it dates from a few months) and the male would come eventually Rotterdam by folder of press.

0.1 Indian rhino "Saathi" arrived at Beauval from Tierpark Berlin, March 16th.
Is it me or is there one hell of a lot of Indian rhino transfers going on at the moment.

There are quite a few at the moment being planned.

Actually, on the Malayan tapir side there will be developments soon too (where Beauval is concerned).

Strangely enough the exhibit is not yet finished ... (that is I believe sometime in April/May).

The building and the "pre-exhibit" are completed, it remains that the finish on the plains (there is that the grass grows, impoundment basins ...) but is quite livable. The opening is scheduled for early April.

Sorry for my English.

The elephants recently featured on Animal Park, one of their former keepers went to vist them after 5 years. it may still be available on BBc iplayer? I was not impressed with the elephant house. i think they need to upgrade the floor at least. Elephant houses are moving towards sand bottoms, it allows the elephants to lie down and get up with ease. plus they will sleep lying down something they do not do on concrete!

Daan the male Indian rhino has arrived at the zoo, as has a male Malayan tapir from Amsterdam, and a pair of fishing cat from La Fleche and a zoo in the Czech republic.

As far as i can tell, a few years ago young animals have first been moved from the breeding facility's to holding facility's to make room for new youngsters.

Now they are coming of breeding age, they are shipped out to replace breeding animals and set up new breeding facility's. I just think it shows a very active and healthy breeding program and a lot of willing participants which i can only bow to, wish all EEP's could be run like this.

I agree, that's not great fun for the rhinos beeing transferred across whole Europe.

I did find the idea of female Baatchi being sent from Chester to Madrid when she is going eventually to Blackpool- only a short distance from Chester, was rather odd. I know it is because Madrid/Blackpool are under the same ownership and that Blackpool have no enclosure for her at present, but this still seems to be an odd move, sending her all that way and then later, back to the UK.

I agree with jwer that the frequent movement of Indian rhinos across EU is rather testament of the current success of the EEP breeding programme than anything else. The frequent shifting is also required to enable the best breeding combinations to be assembled (as unfort. some of the blood lines are more represented than others, so it is important to out-breed).

It is true that usually new zoos are required to house bachelor bulls only before they are allowed to house a pair. I assume that in the case of Zoo Parc de Beauval it is their resident experience in managing and breeding white rhinos that has enabled them to start with a breeding pair right away. Daan is mature (2000 - 9+) and Saathi is just about to ... and already able to breed (2005 - 4+).

Re Madrid Zoo rhinos. Let us wait and see. I will comment shortly in that thread on both whites and Indians.

Any news on the indian rhinos at Beauval? How are Daan and Saathi doing there? Did they settle down well?
