Zoopark Chomutov Zoopark Chomutov

Still invisible but already loud - a litter of wolverine pups was born in January! The first time ever this species bred at Chomutov. The new male from Russia seems to do his job well...

At the end, 2 wolverine cubs have emerged from the den and are already to be seen by visitors. Sex is still unknown but looks more like both are males.

The zoo also announced a death of one of their brown bears Nero aged 28 years. I think they are down to last 2 old bears in their fantastic enclosure (fenced off 1 hectare of old oak forrest with large lake).

The empty enclosure near seals (former beaver exhibit) got a makeover and now hosts a new species - Eurasian otters. The zoopark received 0.2 otters that were found last year like ophaned cubs and raised up by wildlife rescue station Huslík.

BTW, Huslík is one of largest rescue stations in Czechia (we have a national net of 34 official rescue stations that cover area of the whole country). Situated at outskirts of town Poděbrady, it accepts +2000 injured/orphaned animals annually. They have also a small section with permanent exhibits open for visitors with animals that could not be released back into wildness (badgers, owls, eagles, otters, storks etc.).

Construction of new jellyfish exhibit takes longer than expected. Opening is now postponed till early December 2022.

It has 8 tanks. The biggest one is 3 meters long and its acrylic parts were produced in Japan.

Species mentioned in press release: moon jellyfish, cannonball jellyfish and blue blubber jellyfish.

Už se to blíží: Zoopark v prosinci otevře vlastní medúzárium – Zoopark Chomutov

EDIT:
Each Saturday during winter season, between 8:00am and 12:00am, Kamencové lake near the zoo, offers swimming for people who like cold watter. The areal has a lifequard, a pier, changing rooms and toilets. In case the lake or pools would freeze over, ice will be broken. (The lake belongs to the zoopark but it´s a separate area with own entrance. The lake is 16 hectares, has pH 3 and is devoid of any fish or other organisms.)

Two young male Alpine Ibexes arrived from Sweden (Kolmarden) and they were released into resident herd of 5 females.

For 30 years, one wild white stork pair nests at the pelican pond. It is famous localy for collecting human underwear from nearby swimming lake beach and using it in its nest. It has 4 small chicks now. But unexpectedly, a second stork pair is building its nest here too. This pair decided to build it in old sweet chesnut orchard "Kaštanka" where zoopark´s sheep and goats browse. But it´s probably too late in season for them to hatch any chicks.

Resident small flock of Greater flamingos welcomed additional birds from 3 other Czech zoos. They all were put into a small aviary at wintering house so they get used to their new place and company. The zoopark wanted to release them into their normal huge summer open-toped pen soon. But the flock felt good in very crowded space. It swiftly built its nests in the aviary and laid 7 eggs so far. If any chick hatches it would be first ever baby flamingo in Chomutov.

Zoopark offers new house for rent as summer accomodation. It´s placed in skansen area inside the zoo. Capacity for 8 people (240 euro per night for whole house) and allows for free zoo visits even outside official opening hours.

The house itself is from 19th century from a small village Soběnice u Úštěka. It was planned to be demolished but zoopark rescued it, disassembled into pieces, moved and put together like lego again. And added modern amenities inside (including charge for electro bikes).
