ZooPark de Itatiba Zoopark de Itatiba

All the same, my point stands that the AZAB needs to have a national policy no hybrids/crossbreeds and mutation type animals (like white lions and tigers...).
Animália Park and Zoo SP are no longer members of AZAB. There's nothing they can really do.

The giraffe situation in Itatiba (at least regarding Ayana) might soon be adressed, to everyone's relief.

Can You elaborate on the Itatiba situation or is that as yet confidential material (when, so ... fine for now untill it becomes public knowledge)!???

As I've said on this thread before, and on Belo Horizonte's as well (so did David some years back then), FZBH plans to have giraffes again on their collection, and currently the only animal planned to come is Ayana, since she is the only individual "owned" by BH that is still alive.

Altough her move has been planned by the institution for quite some time by now, she still hasn't arrived yet because Belo Horizonte is reforming their giraffe exhibit in order to receive her, since the old giraffe house and exhibit were quite outdated. So, as soon as the works on the exhibit get done, she will be transferred to here.

You can see some pictures of the exhibit during the reconstruction that I have taken myself on my last visit in February (the house and exhibit are mostly done by now from what I've been told, so she well be probably arriving by July):

Itatiba plans to transfer her back to FZBH this year.
Beauty!

I hope the Itatiba Zoo gets a connection with the European region/EAZA and the Giraffe EEP. It would help alot for their small group of Rothschildt's / Nubians to remain viable and relevant.

I do hope the Brasilian zoos in and beyond AZAB will focus on the Southern giraffe Giraffa giraffa and also sort out whether there is just southern/Cape giraffe or also some Angolans ..!

This actually has been figured out for quite some time already. I highly suggest that you check out this thread: A database of giraffes in Brazilian zoos made by @Enzo, where the information of all of the giraffes currently kept by our zoos is present, including subspecies and number of individuals.

@Velas, thank you ... I am familiar with that thread and very much appreciate all Brasil regulars on Zoochat are so commited and empassioned with these issues and the zoo love hobby at large!

We do what we can to help our zoos to get more known and recognised, since Brazil (and South America as a whole as well) seems to be quite unknown for the most part of the members on this site. Besides the info we post here, we (speaking on the behalf of brazilian zoochaters) have been recently updating the collections of our zoos on ZTL, since unfortunately someone managed to mess it all...

Is the Nile Hippopotamus cow known as "Rosa" still alive? She would by now be fifty-five years old, and arrived from Leipzig in 2002.
No, she is not. She was already gone on my first visit, back in early 2014. Gordo, Gurba and Blue (their calf) are the only hippopotamuses in Itatiba.

Rosa is, surprisingly, still alive. She, however, has been renamed Gurba, most likely because Gurbe (the male imported from Germany alongside Rosa) might have passed away years ago.

Updates about Itatiba:

- A new exhibit was opened in the farmyard/petting zoo for baby rabbits. There are also Alpacas in this area, which are a new species for the zoo.
- They acquired a male Blackbuck, bringing their group up to 1.2 individuals.
- The zoo now holds Pantanal cat (Leopardus braccatus). A single individual is shown, but its origins weren't revealed.
- Their Asian water monitor was moved into another exhibit in the new reptile house, where previously Green iguanas, a Softshell turtle and some Red-footed tortoises were living (A turtle appears on the back of the video, I believe it is the softshell).
- A new viewing deck was built on their savannah.

Itatiba has received Atanasio, a 5-year old male Southern white rhino from Buinzoo in Chile. He will be the zoo's first bull rhino in a long time, and hopefully he will breed with Itatiba's two remaining females, Gorda and Lama.
