Zoorasia Zoorasia’s Rarities

Zoorasia, one of Japans more modern zoos contains many species that are both rare and unique in Japan. It’s the only place in Japan where you can see clouded leopards, African wild dogs, douc langurs, the list goes on. What are some more aspects of Zoorasia and some other rarities that make Zoorasia well, Zoorasia?

Zoorasia is without a doubt the best zoo I visited during my trip to Japan. However, It's also the one with a more conventional collection and with fewer rarities. Except for a couple of species of primates and birds, all the animals you can see in Zoorasia are present in European or American collections.

All chimpanzees in Zoorasia are subspecies verus, so I think a purebred group is rare in Asian zoos.
I think that imports from range states might be more regular in Japan (the country has a tradition with interest in primate research and husbandry management).

How large is the chimp group at Zoorasia? Have any other chimpanzee groups in Japan been tested? What is the status of these in Japan overall?

Apart from proboscis monkey does Zoorasia also not have a breeding group of douc langurs?

They had two breeding pairs but one of their breeding males died. The offspring of the pairs were paired and sent to Shunan City’s Tokuyama Zoo
Interesting piece of information!

Do you know the exact status of the red shakend douc langur population in Japan?
ZOORASIA: 1.2? + ?.?
TOKUYAMA: 1?.1?+ ?.?

The pair in Tokuyama is a newly formed pair and have not had any offspring so far.

The widowed female in Zoorasia has 1.2 living offspring not counting the 0.1 that was sent to Shunan.

The other pair from Zoorasia has 1.1 offspring not counting the 1.0 that was sent to Tokuyama.

I’ll be honest there may or may not be information that I missed. @Veno may know something that I missed.

Currently, the Japanese government imposes strict regulations on the import of primates. Most of Western chimpanzees in Japan are individuals imported from Africa for medical experiments over 30 years ago, or their descendants. Presently, chimpanzees are not used in medical experiments at all in Japan. They are then transferred to zoos and the sanctuary, where JAZA coordinates their breeding, categorizing them into Western chimpanzees and others.

Thank you both @PossumRoach and @Veno for all your helpful comments.

I can see a separate thread coming up for documenting the development of various exotic animal species we have been discussing in more general Japan Zoo thread. This relates to both the douc langur and chimpanzees in general in Japanese zoos as well as Przewalski horses.

What is the current status of Przewalski horse at Zoorasia. How many individuals do they have and have there been any recent births of deaths that are noteworthy to mention?

Currently it is (0.2) but will soon be (0.3) because Zoorasia will introduce a new female from Tama
No one of this species has ever died at Zoorasia.
Are there plans to eventually breed? Tama Zoo has now a breeding group that normally is around 9-11 individuals (including the foals)

Found this video on the current 2 Przewalski horses at Zoorasia (Yokohama)

Further information (as per information board):
F Fleur (b. 1/6//2008 Tokyo Tama) and F Jasmine (b. 26/3/2016 Tokyo Tama) and arrived at Zoorasia on January 11th, 2023. It is not mentioned what the long term goal is (to establish another breeding group, perhaps with a new breeding male from outside Japan - speculation).

Does Zoorasia still have clouded leopards and tree kangaroos? Also I just visited the Tennoji Zoo today and the African savannah wasn’t really bad as well for the reptile house and the nocturnal house. The sea lions and penguin habitat was great for Japanese zoo standards but the monkey houses, wolf and cat enclosures were quite sad and disappointing

Yes, Zoorasia still has those two species.
