Zoos of Australia

There’s a new zoo opening on the Central Coast of NSW - Named the Central Coast Zoo. They’re not open completely yet but are doing encounters with Meerkats, Marmosets and reptiles and you can Jake a train ride and see some of the other exhibits. They have six Lions (The Stardust Circus pride, looks like 3.3 from their Facebook page), Ostriches and Camels and have stated they’ve got more coming. Interesting location given Taronga, Sydney Zoo and the Hunter Valley Zoo are all within 1/1.5 hours of the central coast but excited to see how it goes!

Yep. Check out this thread:
Central Coast Zoo

Downfall Creek Bushland Centre in the northern suburbs of Brisbane (at the entrance of Raven Street Bushland Reserve) has a small permanent captive collection inside the centre which opens on weekdays. A walled tank with rainbowfish, Australian bass, gudgeons, freshwater mussels etc. and a set of invertebrate tanks for water scorpion, freshwater prawns, stick insects and rainforest scorpion.

The Cairns Wildlife Dome (aka zoo on top of a casino) will permanently close on 8th October. Infrastructure upkeep is the main reason for the closure apparently: END OF AN ERA: Iconic Cairns kids' adventure attraction to permanently close the doors
Ah yeah, I'd heard about that. Disappointing of course, but I think it's for the best for the animals - some of the exhibits were incredibly poor. Hopefully they will receive better conditions wherever they are relocated to.

Cudgee Creek in Victoria reopened in 2020 under the name Warrnambool Wildlife Encounters.
I just spent some time researching this place via their social media and google maps photos, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of their exhibits and range of animals kept. Whilst mostly natives, they also have a few exotics, namely Blue & Gold Macaw, Hahn's Macaw, some Amazon Parrots, Sambar, Chital & Fallow Deer and Peafowl and most exciting, some capuchin monkeys. Some of the notable natives include White Bellied Sea Eagle, dingo, a few different Owls and cockatoos, Koalas and several types of waterfowl. I will certainly aim to visit if I'm ever down that way again.

This is my first post here, but I've been going through the list, and the following parks seem to be closed:

*Daintree Wild Zoo (Wonga) (Website shows nothing about animals, reviews state there are no longer animals)
*Australian Venom Zoo (Kuranda)
*Eagle's Nest Wildlife Hospital Inc. (Ravenshoe) (stated on their website)
*Bungalow Bay Koala Village (Magnetic Island) (Website has nothing about it, and Facebook hasn’t been updated in two years)
*WILD LIFE Hamilton Island (Hamilton Island) (Website no longer exists, however recent reviews suggest it does still exist? Possibly sold to different owner?)
*Flying High Bird Sanctuary (Apple Tree Creek) (Article-https://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/bundaberg/business/the-uncertain-future-of-flying-high-bird-park-amid-sudden-closure/news-story/336555e009a1093af786ed4f095153a9)
* Reef HQ Aquarium (Townsville) is currently closed for redevelopment, but expected to re-open in 2026 as the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium.

*Frogarium (Coffs Harbour) (Article-https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/coffs-harbour/peter-johnsons-frogarium-frog-zoo-plan-back-at-bonville-coffs-harbour/news-story/41ef11918793787de9fc41c645844132)
*Australian Museum (Sydney) (I went here in September, there no longer seem to be live displays)
*Birdland Animal Park (Batemans Bay)(article -https://aboutregional.com.au/iconic-batemans-bay-tourist-attraction-birdland-closes-its-gates/463527/)
*Narrandera Mini Zoo (Narrandera)

*Eildon Deer Park (Thornton) (was unable to find anything recent on this park)

*Stanley Seaquarium (Stanley)

*Eyre Peninsula Wildlife Park / Port Lincoln Farm Park (both located within the Glen Forest Tourist Park, Port Lincoln)
*Moonta Wildlife Park (Moonta)
*Wallaroo Fauna Park (Wallaroo)

*Rainbow Jungle (Kalbarri) (‘temporarily closed’ due to cyclone damage in 2021, and doen’t seem to have re-opened
*Quindalup Fauna Park (Quindalup) (was unable to find anything recent on this park)

These parks are Missing From WA:
*Ardyloon Hatchery
*Denmark Animal Farm
*Esperance Bird and Animal Park
*Greenough Wildlife Park
*Ningaloo Aquarium

Also Dolphin Marine Magic is now Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary.

A new zoo (at least to me):

Fauna Australia
location: Lavers Hill on the Great Ocean Road, Vic.
website: www.koalaphoto.com.au

There was a fauna park at Lavers Hill located within a caravan park and only accessible to the caravan park residents, it may be that it is that park opened to the public.

That makes four wildlife parks on the Great Ocean Road between Lorne and Warrnambool.

Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Park (Barwon Heads) is now located in Chewton (some distance from Barwon Heads). They took over the Australian Dingo Farm property and animals after the death of it's owner.

Having said that, I realized one is not included in the list, probably because it opened immediately before COVID.

Wildlife Wonders
near Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road.

That’s been there quite a while. I stayed there with my wife before we had kids and my daughter has just turned 15.
