Zoos of Australia

From their website, Feathers Sanctuary in Darwin appears to be an bed & breakfast with a lot of wild birds around it, and does not appear to display any animals, so should probably be removed.

It is, however, a Full Institutional member of ZAA.

*Speaking of which, what's the deal with Ashmore Palms on the Gold Coast? On another thread I saw they have a hyacinth macaw in their collection. Googling showed it to be a retirement home or something like that. Is it something that should be on the list? (Question for anyone who has been there, retired or not ;))

It is a high class caravan park. The owner's passion is neotropical birds, particularly macaws, and he is fortunate enough to have the wherewithal to indulge his passion. A very nice family.

It is not open to the public as a park. The collection includes all of the commonly available large macaws plus the Hyacinthine and Red-fronted. There are also some Amazon species and exotic cockatoos.

The collection is more postage stamp than serious breeding.

OK so Feathers Sanctuary would be on, and Ashmore Palms off.

Any news on the Koala Park Sanctuary in Sydney, and on whether the Venom Zoo in Kuranda is open or closed, anyone?

I was talking a a staffer from one of the capta properties and although I didn't ask him directly if he knew, I got the impression the venom zoo is still there. The website has not been updated for some time.

Ok, so it must be open to the public. I was reading it's website as I am going to Darwin and got the opposite impression. Another one to add to the list.

I saw feathers sanctuary on getaway once, looked beautiful. Definately should be on the list. It had many finches, parrots and softbills captive in aviaries.

is anyone familiar with Wild Action, in Victoria?
Wild Action, The Zoo Comes To You!, Chris Humfrey, Wildlife shows, reptile shows, incursions, Endangered Species, Australian Animals, mobile zoo and Native Animals

Their homepage says "Chris Humfrey's private zoo is nestled in the foothills of Mt Macedon. Our collection consists of many rare and endangered creatures. All of our animals are hand reared and amenable to handling, and provide for a unique and exceptional wildlife encounter. Remember, we come to you!"

Is this a zoo that should be on the list, or does it only do off-site shows?

There is a series of programs on ABC at the moment about this person and his collection.

I may have missed it already written somewhere, but Calmsley Hill City Farm, they have native fauna there too
:)

the original post has now been updated (thanks to ZYBen) to include the newer information in the thread :)

another little edit now done because I forgot to put in which facilities were ZAA members, and I also added in the PRIAM Psittaculture Centre in NSW mainly because it is an associate ZAA member (I can't work out if its open to the public in any way or not; but they do appear to be quite involved in captive-breeding of some native mammals, not just exotic parrots).

PRIAM is not open to the public.

It is arguably the most scientific breeder of exotic and native psittacines in this country.

I have just found another couple of places for the list:

QUEENSLAND:
*Bungalow Bay Koala Village (Magnetic Island) Magnetic Island Backpackers Accommodation YHA Townsville, North Queensland which has a wildlife park with various native species which the backpackers can play with, including koalas and saltwater crocodiles.

NSW:
*Macadamia Castle (Knockrow, near Byron Bay) Welcome to the Macadamia Castle which appears to be largely farm-stock but also has a variety of birds and reptiles (150 mammals, birds and reptiles including 16 species of birds, 10 species of mammals and 7 reptile species)

Bredl's Wonder World of Wildlife (South Australia) has closed down in May this year, and Dundee's Wildlife and Crocodile Park (South Australia) is closing in June (this month).
