Zoos that lead in breeding certain species

Historically they sometimes kept over 100 giraffes at one time, zootierliste suggests they have now 'only' circa 25.

It's a damn shame that the massive herds of multiple giraffe species they held were all shot dead in a single day back in the 1970s for still-unclear political reasons..... :(

It’s under the Smithsonian umbrella and Smithsonian does breed them. (The group not the zoo) point still stands the Smithsonian is most likely what the original poster was referring to.

Yes, it’s clearly the Smithsonian they’re referring to as they’re the most successful outside of New Zealand in breeding kiwis. One pair alone produced eight offspring within their (relatively short) 15 year lifespan.

New Zealand has a National Aquarium (in Napier) but does not have a National Zoo. Our four main zoos are Auckland Zoo, Hamilton Zoo, Wellington Zoo and Orana Wildlife Park.

Rotterdam: white-naped mangabeys, blacknose sharks (formerly, the female sadly died), black-and-rufous sengi, perhaps also king penguins and gentoos, as well as red panda's historically, though they havent been that active as of late
Wuppertal: barn swallows, no questions asked

Yes I Was Referring to The Smithsonian National Zoo. I did not realize other places were called the same thing, sorry for the confusion.

I know it’s a bit off topic, but which zoo would you guys consider to be the best when it comes to breeding any species of elephant shrew/sengi. For me it doesn’t really matter if it occurred in the past, or in the present, I was only curious to see which zoo in particular still have/had the best, breeding track record for any Macroscelidean species, in general.

ZSL London has a pretty steady record with Okapis and Aye-Ayes, and currently have a rather prolific sloth pairing.

Hands down Cleveland's Metropark Zoo on: Masai Giraffe.

St. Louis Zoo: Lesser Kudu, Grevy's Zebra

Lincoln Park Zoo (of course) Lowland Gorillas!

Denver Zoo: Grevy's Zebra

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Seaworld for orcas (albeit the controversy and eco-type mixing)

This is one of those forgotten O ya indeed acknowledgements. Perhaps not acknowledged because doing so would mean in eyes of the reader meant an automatic endorsement, which I'm very sure is nothing more than stating a fact! Kudo's would have to be given assuring an animals needs that they can readily breed and produce offspring.

I will say SeaWorld has lead in the breeding of many other species: bottlenose Dolphins, comersons Dolphins, belugas, walruses, Humboldt penguins, flamingo, emperor Penguin, king penguin, puffins, sea turtles, endangered frogs (supposedly).

Breeding sea turtles?
