Zoos vs Aquariums vs "World-class"

Moderator note - thread split from this one: Otters as pets in Japan....

I find this whole thread quite odd. A bunch of Westerners gloating about how bad Japanese animal welfare is, meanwhile their local zoo probably is some outdated one with exhibits from 20 years ago...

I haven't read the thread (maybe I should) but I thought it was about illegally obtained wild otters being sold as pets. What has that got to do with "Western" zoos?

If you think it's a problem for zoos to have exhibits from 20 years ago, then you're living in a different reality than the rest of us. A lot of exhibits from twenty years ago hold up remarkably well. Roger Williams Park Zoo's snow Leopard and asiatic black bear habitats were built in the late '90s, but I'd consider them better than many of the exhibits the zoo's built since (and many snow Leopard exhibits built elsewhere since). Detroit Zoo's Arctic Ring of Life, Bronx Zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest, many other great exhibits that are consistently rated amongst the best are twenty years old and older. Not to mention how unrealistic it'd be for a zoo to be financially capable of renovating it's entire facility in twenty years.

Man, I was following you and then you just started rating about North American zoos

Do you have anything against zoos purely because they happen to be in North America? Do you have anything against the specific exhibits I cited that are twenty years old? If so, I'd love to hear what your rationale is. Are there a lot of bad zoos in North America? Yes, there absolutely is. But there are also plenty of incredible zoos in the United States as well. Similarly, I'm sure in Europe, Japan, or wherever else it is you're looking at, there are some great zoos and some awful zoos.

I don't even care about zoos

I can't begin to imagine how empty your life must be to read a discussion forum themed for something you "don't even care about". But to have done so for 6 years while making an average of more than 1 post a day?

Surely there are better ways to invest your time?

I should have rephrased it. I don't care about zoos, moreso aquariums.

Ignoring obvious questions about why you be on this site and have well over 2,000 posts if that was the case, than why did you even make that comment in the first place?

No, but just as many zoos have them as aquariums.

This is false. I am going to try to list as many aquariums with world-class exhibitry as possible.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Osaka Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium
Georgia Aquarium
Shedd Aquarium
Aquamarine Fukushina
Lisbon Aquarium
Acuario de Valencia
Two Oceans Aquarium
Numazu Deepsea Aquarium

And this is just within a quick timespan. I'm sure I can list more.
