Zootierliste Goes Worldwide

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for an account to go from Beobachter to the next level and if you need to send an email or receive one to do so? Thank you.

We added almost 250 missing institutions today. If you find any more (that you have visited and you know they exist and keep animals) then feel free to let me know :)
Where is the line wherein we count things? Farms? Petting Zoos with only Domestics? Is there any threshhold?

I should explain the reason I asked. It’s hard to know, other than yourself, who is speaking with authority about ZTL practices and policy, and who is just expressing an opinion.
The ZTL-Admins on Zoochat are Animal (laminA on ZTL), Hongabonga, Proteles (Timboyok on ZTL) and me, Eagle (Delacouri on ZTL). There are two other ZTL-Admins who aren't a member on Zoochat (Milu and Irbis).

What is best practice for species that were signed but not seen during a visit, when nobody else has entered it as seen yet? Is there an established practice on ZTL already regarding this?

Yes, (Not seen, signposted) / (Nicht gesehen, ausgeschildert)
As opposed to
(Seen, signposted) / (Gesehen, ausgeschildert)

I noticed a lot of North American entries are straying from this (Seen, signposted) format that has been a standard on ZTL.

@CMP While I think that was a good PSA (I've noticed some entries not using that format as well) my actual question was about whether to add new entries when all we have is (Not seen, signposted) rather than the formatting.

I'm curious as to why Steinhart Aquarium is listed separately from California Academy of Sciences - the aquarium is fully contained within the Academy building and is on the same ticket with no additional charge. I don't see any precedent for splitting it off into its own heading, so I'm curious what the logic was on that decision.

I'm glad you brought this up before I started going through my full list for CAS, I've already included a few entries for CAS but did not notice that the aquarium was separate. I agree, it is really just a large exhibit within the museum, there is no reason for it to be included as a different entry.

I see no reason not to, unless you hold serious doubts for whatever reason about the validity of the signage. Worst case scenario is that the sign was left up but the species in question are no longer there - in which case, subsequent visitors could switch the entry to a former holding.

Something I'm surprised no one has brought up -

When using Zooinstitutes as a source, use with caution - as inevitably [it's a photographic archive] many of the animals depicted on the website will no longer be at the zoo.
Of course this isn't to say 'don't use Zooinstitutes' [for sure it works great in the case of former-holdings]... but make sure to use it with other sources.

Hello. I am updating the database as thoroughly as I can.
Someone is fooling around with the Latin American database.

- Belize Zoo only holds native species (as pointed out by @Neil chace), although an user added addax and plains zebra to the species list.
- No zoo in Venezuela currently has giraffes, although the same user added reticulated girafe to Bararida's species list.
- Not only that, but Pomerode (as well as many other Latin American zoos) also faces the same issue: reticulated giraffes on a database they shouldn't be (EcoParque Zoo Pomerode holds a Cape giraffe named Ethema).
- I have seen many other issues with the databases of most Latin American zoos, like seeing Cape buffalo being listed as a currently held species at zoos like La Serena, where only the water species has been kept.

How do I know the user who's doing this is the same person? The way they "prove" the species they add are at the respective zoos: just by adding "visited (insert year here) (seen)".

To the unknown user: if you are reading this, please don't update the database before checking your sources.

What you are describing is also common on the North American side of things. Some people are jumping in head over heels without checking for accuracy.

For those who do not know ztl also includes extinct taxa such as thylacine, Carolina parakeet, and quagga. So if anyone knows wether or not any recently extinct species were kept in zoos outside Europe this is your chance to share the knowledge on the captive history of these taxa (given that there’s evidence).
