ZSL London Zoo ZSL - Childrens Zoo Concept

Opps my bad, i guess the red pandas will just have to be removed once they get stressed! I can imagine the opening day, poor things :(

I would have thought the better solution would have been NOT TO PUT THEM IN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE :mad:

Also, why couldn't london bring in a more arboreal species of lemur (apart from the fact that the enclosure is clearly too small).
 
I think you are exaggerating the sensitivity of red pandas. A species with the physiology to live on bamboo has not got much nervous energy to waste. They have very few natural predators and they don't even interact very vigorously with each other. Lemurs, even bamboo lemurs, are much more highly strung.
Have you seen the red panda enclosure at Blackpool? It's quite small and the nestboxes are right up against the public viewing area, but the pandas don't seem to be stressed. So long as they have enough climbing opportunities - preferably getting well above the children, I'm sure they will be fine.

True, Blackpools Panda enclosure is very small.

I have seen the pandas jump down from a tree thet were in and run to a nest boxs the other side, which Chesters do not even when there is a crowd of people around the enclosure.
 
My point was chiefly that Red Pandas are often 'sleepy' in the daytime so possibly not the best species to lend themselves to this sort of exhibit?

Ruffed Lemur might be better being a more arboreal species. The sudden roaring noise they make would be exciting/scary for children too. Coatis are active and inquisitive so good as exhibit material.
 
Interesting, that article mentions that the children's zoo will have Aardvarks, Coati, Cape Porcupine, Llama and Alpaca, yet fails to mention the red pandas (despite them being on the logo for the exhibit)
 
The exhibit is almost finished, I noticed prairie marmots are in, plus a black hornbill in the aviary that was supposedly for parakeets in the treetop zone.....

I'm not sure where the meerkats are going, unless they are being mixed with the mongoose, but the exhibits aren't very large, so it will be interesting to see what they do.

Shame part of the exhibit didn't include knocking down that monstrous old sealion viewing terrace/show animal cages.....they really are the pits, and I was under the impression that the display animals were to form part of the children's zoo exhibit.

I have also seen squirrel monkey babies on my way past.
 
I was there today, in the POURING rain, but it looked really good despite the weather, I thought. The coatis are in and they were fiddling with the fountain in the Lubetkin penguin pool.

The coatis were in the fountain? or do you mean they were fixing the fountain.

For a split second i had a vision of coatis fixing a fountain! :confused:
 
Good to hear of squirrel monkey births at last , I thought some of the females looked quite large last month .

Sorry, really unclear, Workmen were fixing the fountain and the coatis were safely in what I assume is about to become Treetop zone... I knew what I meant :)
 
there is a article about the childrens zoo in the daily express paper this morning:

"The worlds most famous children zoo has been given a £2.3 million makeover.

seventy years after the first opening of its doors to youngsters, london zoo's regents park menagerie childrens section is back with a new concept in wildlife experiences called Animal Adventure

and there will not be a computer monitor in sight.

Instead, youngsters will get to meet an exotic array of ncreatures which the zoo hopes will inspire future generations of conservationists.

Children will find ropes and swings, tunnels and a splash zone to play on too in the grounds"
