ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2012

The camels are in there new enclosure as of last week. The metal fencing still blocks off access to the rest of the area where the tiger build is happening but they have opened it up enough so you can see/walk up to the new camel enclosure.

The Oasis Cafe is now closed, the new temporary cafe is now open, which looks quite nice, lots of glass windows/walls.

Not ANOTHER revamp of the cafe? How much money has that swallowed up in the last twenty years in refurbishment?

As I've said before there have been times I (and I therefore assume others) couldn't get in as it was full, so they must be losing potential income. So I'm all for it, more money for conservation and the zoos.

Exactly and it is something which generates income. People have high expectations and catering facilities need to be updated all the time in my view.

Zookeeper for a day

My Keeper for a day was an amazing experience.
The highlight being able to feed the Anteaters by hand with mealworms.
Other duties were cleaning the Giraffes out and then feeding them with carrots.
Cleaning the rocks in the Penguin pool and then spending time interacting with the penguins.
Preparing food for the Bearded Pigs and then feeding them.
Hand feeding the Spider Monkeys.
Feeding the Ringtail Lemurs, Meerkats, Llama and Alpaca.

The plans for the new cafe look good... there will be an upstairs outdoor terrace looking down over Barclay Court which will be lovely in the summer. The staff cafe will also be rebuilt and cheered up which will be very welcome. Apparently the new building will cut energy consumption enormously as well as providing lots of extra seating, can't be bad!

Yep, since I first saw the plans I've been looking forward to sitting on the terrace in the summer. If anyone wants to see the plans I think I've posted a link here a couple of times, although the first one was quite a few months ago.

Some developments in the Rainforest this week.

Cotton-top Tamarins have been born, they have given birth to twins. The Cotton-top Tamarins live in one of the glass enclosures at the back as you walk around the Rainforest (plus have the outdoor area as well).

The Golden Lion Tamarins have been moved off show. These are the ones which where in one of the glass enclosures at the back, not the ones which roam free in the Rainforest (those are the golden headed lion tamarins and they remain).

A new mixed enclosure has been created where the Golden Lion Tamarins where - which include, Prince, the male sloth, 3 of the Goeldi's Monkeys (who used to be in the first glass enclosure on your right as you enter the Rainforest) and the Potoroo.

A single Goeldi's Monkey remain in there old enclosure for the time being.

Do you know why the sloths have been separated?

A new male was introduced with the hope of breeding with the existing female. When the new male was introduced everything was fine for a bit, but ultimately it wasn't meant to be and the new male and Prince couldn't be kept together. So Prince is living in the new mixed enclosure as above, with the new male and the female in the open rainforest.

The single female Goeldi's marmoset will be going off to another zoo for breeding purposes soon; they haven't decided yet what to put in that first enclosure when she goes.

With the shorter days and earlier evenings the tamandua has been coming down from her perch and wandering about during the afternoon, so we've had some splendid views of her. The new young sloth is called Leander, by the way.

And elsewhere in the zoo the new female tiger Melati is settling in a bit better now, she's been in the outdoor area recently, looking reasonably relaxed. She hasn't actually met Jae Jae yet but they must be aware of each other.
