ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2015

Almost certainly Red Natal, but one can always hope for Blue ;)

Was at the zoo on Saturday, and asked for you, they are indeed Red Forest... They're not on show at the moment, waiting for more to arrive.

The spider monkeys are VERY active in their new enclosure.

the gorillas were shut in today, looks like some work is being done to the island.

the lion development is really coming along, a lot of the rear-rockwork looks to be in place, as are what look like visitor ramps and part of a 'temple'.

Gorillas are still stuck indoors, there's still work going on with their outdoor area, completely redesigned, looks good,
The Gorillas look a bit miserable though.

What has been done to the outside?

The entirety of the outdoor 'enrichment' area has been replaced and rebuilt, there's new platforms built in to the trees, looks quite good.
There was around 10 workmen still working on it yesterday afternoon.
The walkway at the back of the exhibit, shared with the Mangabeys is blocked off as well, not sure if something is happening there as well.

What's more I've seen the group actually use it!!!:D

Novelty factor.;) But the platforms etc should encourage more usage as previously there were just the tree trunks to climb with little for them to sit on up there.

Does anyone know if the Zootierliste is correct for the collection as I have noticed some species on the list I haven't seen there before will be visiting this Saturday 03rd October.

Just a suggestion, but if there are specific species you are interested in seeing and want to know if & where they are on show, why not ask about those?
I doubt many people will have the time to check the entire list!!

Ok Pipaluk here is a list of species I would love to see but have my doubts about them being on show or even in the collection.

Black Hornbill, Brogla, Red legged honeycreeper, Black tailed prairie dog, Kinkajou (Honey bear), Moholi Bushbaby, Pictus cat, Swinhoe Striped squirrel, Kikuyu guereza, Pied tamarin,

Black hornbills are on show in the end outdoor aviary of the Blackburn Pavilion (in the direction of Land of the Lions), though you may not see them out. If you do it'll only be the male.
Brolgas aren't there anymore, there's a red-crowned crane instead (in the Snowdon Aviary)
Red-legged honeycreepers are on show in the Pavilion, aviary just to the right of the entrance to the walkthrough.
Black-tailed prairie dogs are in Animal Adventure, just beyond the aardvark viewing window to your left.
Kinkajous are in the old elephant house, though you have a very small chance of seeing them as they're always hidden away fast asleep.
Moholi bushbabies are in Night Life, in the exhibit just before you reach the water rats and mole rats.
Pictus cats should be on show in the Amazon hall of the aquarium. May not be.
Swinhoe's squirrels are in the enclosure directly in front of the door into Rainforest Life.
Kikuyu Guerezas you cannot miss, they live opposite the gorilla indoor enclosure next door to the mangabeys.
Pied tamarins are there but off show.

Black Hornbill is definitely still present and on-display; cannot recall where.

Brolga is down to a single individual to my knowledge; you will find that in the Snowdon. It was very elderly so may be gone by now.

Red-legged Honeycreeper is still present in the collection but I do not recall whether they are onshow at present or not.

Prairie Dogs are definitely still present, think they are in the children's zoo area. Not sure why these are a species you'd "love to see" when they are common as dirt and held in many collections you are well-familiar with. :p

Kinkajou is on display in the Casson.

Moholi Bushbaby is on display in the basement of the Clore.

No idea regarding the Pictus Cat, but the last inventory released suggested a fair few were held; I asssume if they are still present they are in the Aquarium.

Swinhoe Striped Squirrel is on display at the entrance to the Clore.

Kikuyu Guereza are on display near the Gorillas if I recall rightly.

Think the Pied Tamarin are off-display.

The thing with London is that not that much changes, the same species have been in the same enclosures for a while...

I believe Pied Tamarins are quite tough to keep, let alone breed, so good they're off show...

They are one of those frustrating buggers that either does very well, or does very badly, in my experience. The group at Magdeburg Zoo, for instance, are on-display and regularly breeding - whilst Chester has held the species for 11 years now, with the taxon being off-display for the majority of this time if I recall rightly, but only very recently managed to breed the species.
