ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

There was talk of a couple of aviaries in the new lion enclosure for the wooley-necked storks and hornbills or Brahminy Kites, does anyone know if there are any aviaries and if so, any new species?

Can anyone update the situation regarding the Red Duiker and Goodfellow`s Tree Kangaroos at the zoo ??

I believe that there is a pair of red duiker and a single Goodfellow's tree kangaroo.

Unless there has been a change recently, neither are currently on exhibit but I am certainly looking forward to seeing them in due course.

From what I understand the duikers are in quarantine in the Okapi house, hence why the house has been closed for some time. As for the Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo, I thought the zoo was getting more than 1 of this particular species. I believe that they are off show and will eventually be put into Rain Forest

Many thanks Tim.

Yes, that's what I understand too.

I assumed that the zoo would acquire more that one Goodfellow's tree kangaroo (I certainly hope so) but I was only aware that one had arrived so far.

It will definitely be nice to see that species back in the collection again.

Thank you, any idea where the Tree Kangaroo came from, or when the next one will arrive ?

I'm sorry I can't provide you with that information or give you a definite answer. In conversation with some of the volunteers, they are aware that tree kangaroos are due at the zoo but they don't have full details

As has been mentioned elsewhere on ZooChat, I think that London Zoo acquired a female Goodfellow's tree kangaroo from Frankfurt.

I don't have any details about any subsequent tree kangaroo arrivals.

Has anybody heard news about a Tapir birth?

I've heard nothing and I noticed that someone asked the question via London Zoo Twitter. The answer given was " any zoo births will be announced on our social media site or on our website" however there has been no news

The indoor section of the Casson was open today and I saw both tapirs in there. No obvious sign of a calf but I didn't look closely.

Effie's baby?

I was watching a recent( 2nd February) video of Gorilla 'Effie' playing with the older baby 'Alika'. No(apparent) sign of her own though. Anyone know what has happened?

I've heard nothing about any problems with Effie, however she does hide out the way, either top right of enclosure or against back wall on left hand side. I'm hoping to visit the zoo next Wednesday, so I will keep an eye out for Effie

Thanks. In the video she is playing with Alika with both hands free and no sign of her own baby, which I think is too small to be away from her yet...unless she allows one of the other females to take it, that is.

I seen Mjukuu with both babies, so perhaps there is a bit of baby sitting going on for short periods

There was a female with small baby up in the top right yesterday as well as Alika playing with a female. I'm not great at identifying the females and there were school parties in the way, but I'm sure I saw both youngsters.

That would explain things- Mjukuu has perhaps stronger mothering instinct so likely to borrow Effie's baby. It would explain why he was not apparent in the video. Its okay as long as Effie continues to mother it properly though sometimes in these cases that does not happen...

Yes, Mjukuu is doing a bit of baby sitting – she is still feeding Alika so has enough milk. The keepers aren't worried apparently, all is well.

The cotton-top tamarin appear to have been moved off display from the rainforest and their indoor enclosure cleaned out So that is now two empty enclosures in the rain forrest.
