ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

Anyone know the life history of the new male lion Bhanu? Age? Mother-raised?

From what I understand, Bhanu has a twin brother called Kamal. They have been at Winninpeg since 2012, when they came from Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg.

went to london zoo yesterday and it was a very good day loved the ayes ayes and the okapi even with the noisy school children being around . saw a few empty exhibits dotted around the place but overall was a good day feel free to ask questions will do my best to answer

Out of interest where abouts in the Zoo are the Ayes Ayes?

Just before you leave the lemur indoor quarters, on the right hand side, a slightly darken space. Let your eyes get adjusted to the dark and walk towards your right, ayes ayes in that exhibit. Sometime difficult to spot, need a bit of patience

Ah great thanks! When I go next I will have a good look :)

Gorilla rearing.

Recent photos I've seen show Mjukuu carrying both babies in the outside area, her own on her back and Gernot underneath. Comments also say she is feeding him too. Does this mean Effie no longer cares for him, or is she still involved some of the time?

I'm pretty sure that I have seen vice versa with Effie carrying both, as well.

This behaviour was first noticed by staff in December. Unusual, but I don't think Effie's completely given up. Keepers are letting the group get on with it and, I think, are working along the lines of "if it ain't broke..."

Ria the tamandua in the rainforest had a baby a few weeks ago and is now bringing it out of the nesting box into view – quite a sight!

Pretty exciting about the Aye-Aye and the baby tamandua!

Anyone else going to the members/fellows LotL opening on the 18th?

I must try and see the baby tamandua on my next visit to London Zoo. However, I'm slightly confused because like you, I thought that the adult female was called Ria but London Zoo called the new mother Aninha, when and why has the name changed

Name has been Aninha for at least two weeks. Unknown as to why.

Her proper name was always Aninha; Ria is her nickname and what we all call her (something to do with Brazil??).

Thanks for this information but when she arrived at London Zoo in 2014, the football World Cup was taking place in Brazil. I'm sure that on a ZSL website, we were invited to name the female from 3 choices. 1 was a Brazilian footballer, 1 was Ria and the other choice I can't remember. ZSL announced that the female would be called Ria. Since then presenters and volunteers have all called her Ria, it's only now that Aninha has been mentioned

As far as I'm aware, they have simply changed the name. I don't think there's any reasoning behind it but I can always find out next weekend when I visit.
