ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

Visitor figures for 2015 have been released on the ALVA website, London was the 24th position on the list for paid attractions, Chester was 12th.

Great to see Chester's attendance up by 18%. I imagine zoos everywhere will see that as a glowing endorsement of big investment in new exhibits. Even if they can't follow through in the same way themselves this is positive.

Using the accepted definition on this site it would seem that the Horniman Museum and Aquarium is the third most popular zoo in the UK! A little amusing :)

There seem to be lots of zoos missing, I assume this is a voluntary list rather than an exhaustive one.

Just got a members email about the preview days for Land of the Lions. Anyone planning on going?

There are bookable time-slots on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th March. Might go on the 18th.

London's founder group of Asiatic lions were Arfur, Jake, Chandani and Ruchii.

I'm aware that Ruchii is the grandmother to the current 3 females Rubi, Indi and Heidi. However, what became of Arfur, Jake and Chandani?

Jake and Chandani went to Chester in 1994 - They went on to have 13 cubs over four litters. Jake then moved to La Boissiere in France during 2000 where he eventually died. Chandani stayed at Chester until her death in 2005

Arfur died at London in January 1995

How many intruders did Arfur maul? I know he attacked a man in c1993 but did he maul an earlier intruder?

Little Tiger update.

Cinta left for Prague last week, Thursday I believe, which leaves just Jae-Jae and Melati at the zoo.

Yesterday and today they were in the pond enclosure together, from the morning until the 3pm talk.
For the majority of the time they sat apart, but Jae attempted to go over to her on a few occasions, before being snarled at.
He spent much of the afternoon scent marking everything in the enclosure whilst roaring every 5 seconds.

Once they were in their own enclosures, Melati was a lot friendlier, sitting the other side of the glass and chuffing at him, keepers are expecting that if all goes to plan over the next few weeks, another cub or cubs could be there in the middle of summer.

The Tamandua baby is out and about quite a bit in the afternoon, best time to see it is around 4pm.

The male Lion is at the zoo, but can't be seen just yet, the lionesses can be seen if you stand near the Lubetkin pool.

Yes, I am going to the ZSL Fellows preview of the new lion exhibit; I am booked on the 3:00pm slot on Friday 18th March.

It would be nice to meet some other ZooChatters there.

Am booked onto the 12.00 slot on Friday 18th. Looking forward to it, hope to meet a few of you there :)

Visited the zoo today; saw an enclosure between Land of Lions and the flamingo lake that seemed to be housing a pair of Reeves' muntjac...seems to be that old little reservoir bit of the lake with an island in it :)

And the Goeldi's have been moved into the old cottontop enclosure, whilst the whole row of enclosures that used to hold the Goeldi's and Geoffroy's marmosets is being prepared for new residents...

The new residents started moving into the first few sections of the left hand enclosure yesterday – they are striped mongoose.
