When I was getting into zoo work I went to london a lot..they shared a similar passion for inverts as ours..I have a book about uk zoos from 80s..gives info on collections. Felt like crying at some of their previous..tas devils, coyote, dingos...in recent times the biggest change ive seen is the reduction of venomous snakes. Around 2001 they had around 20 species on display..they reduced whole reptile collection to focus on certain species..thinking probably cost of anti venom too. We scrapped a scorpion species..due to cost and short life of anti venom..anyone on here like venomous snakes purchase venom interviews dvd..specialist dvd about captive care,laws,envenomation etc..

first visit in a year or so and really haooy to see so much activitivty from the stripey mongoose. does make me wonder about Chester keeping them off show
Has the Casson been closed to the public again? Doors say staff only. Was hoping to see the Malayan Tapirs but no chance of seeing them outside :/

well I tried walking up to the old doors but no luck, looks like it's really closed again. Shame as it was always a nice quiet building to escape the crowds

I'm hoping it's to allow piece and quiet for tapir breeding. But changing that old signage would be an improvement too!
Today was my first visit since last year I think, so not sure what's new and what's not. I renewed my lapsed membership so hope to visit more often again from now on. The Boky-boky were nice and active, there was some squabbling between the Aye-ayes so can't help but wonder if Malcolm has nearly outstayed his welcome with mum Salem. The old Brown Rat underground-style enclosure has been refurbished and now houses bushbabies, the naked Mole Rat enclosure has gone and been refurbished for lesser hedgehog Tenrecs. As mentioned above the Casson is closed; outside the is an exhibition of photos from the Photo Ark with highlighted ones that were taken at ZSL. The old Striped Squirrel enclosure as you enter the Clore was empty first thing (except for a few plants) but had been completely covered with decorative signage in the afternoon.
Edit: the Rodriguez Fruit Bats have moved out of the Tecton Gorilla House (the inside of which is now closed) and are now in the rainforest walk through.

The new Tenrec enclosure looked good, but the Tenrecs were invisible like usual.
Just remembered, the zoo are in the process of introducing some new male Ring-tailed Lemurs from Whipsnade into the London group.
