ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

So where did Jae Jae end up?

Jae Jae is currently at Tierpark Berlin, where he arrived 11/01/2022.

After London, he was sent to Parc des Félins 30/01/2019, where they tried unsuccessfully to breed him to an older tigress named Isha.

For the record, Jae Jae is the most impressive male of his species I’ve ever seen - his ruff is incredible.

What other potential pairings would even be possible? Bearing in mind the recent increased difficulties & cost in moving animals to and from the continent...

While it would be among the most complicated options logistically, Australasia has several tigers that would be of use to Europe.

In 2008, three cubs were imported from Indonesia (born to wild born parents) by Australia Zoo. Of these, the male is 14 and has never been bred from; while one of the females produced a single male cub before her death.

The other female has eight surviving offspring. There appear to be no immediate plans for the five youngest offspring; and with two of their elder siblings in breeding placements, it’s not hard to imagine we could spare one of these tigers:

1.0 Scout (08/02/2016) Juma x Kaitlyn
1.0 Nelson (03/06/2019) Ranu x Kaitlyn
1.0 Malcolm (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn
0.1 Sallie (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn
0.1 Sage (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn

Would Budi (born at London zoo to JaeJae x Melatai) who's currently at Welsh Mountain zoo and never bred, be suitable for breeding if a suitable female was found? I'm presuming he's genetically valuable?

Apologies if this is going off thread

Although he’s from a reasonably valuable line, he has four full siblings - most of which will also be breeding. His younger sister produced triplets last year. This would decrease the likelihood of him going into a breeding placement anytime soon.

If possible, I’d look outside the region. London Zoo has the means to undertake this and by importing from the USA and Australia previously, created a valuable bloodline for the region.

How many cubs did Melatai and JaeJae have? Was it just the 4 cubs or did some not survive?

They had six cubs:

1.0 Unnamed (22/09/2013) Died 12/10/2013

1.0 Budi (03/02/2014) Welsh Mountain Zoo
1.0 Nakal (03/02/2014) West Midland Safari Park
0.1 Cinta (03/02/2014) Prague Zoo

1.0 Achilles (27/06/2016) Howletts Wildlife Park
0.1 Karis (27/06/2016) Heidelberg Zoo (0.3 offspring)

is achilles still around as when i went to howlets recently i didnt see it there

I assume there were some other issues aswell? Euthanasia purely due to a white tail seems a little harsh.

Reading back through comments on ZooChat, his colour appears to be the only reason (he also had white paws).

I believe the zoo have always been keen to move their tigers on (which apparently contributed to the decision to euthanise Chewie also) and with these genetic defects, the tiger was unable to be placed in any zoo.

Are there any genetic physical and physical defects linked to the colour and having white paws? As very few tigers are destined for reintroduction programmes, does the colour really matter?

Not to my knowledge. I suppose it was viewed as a mutation and the breeding programme is only interested in breeding phenotypically normal tigers.

I can understand why he was removed from the breeding programme, but think it’s a shame he couldn’t have been donated to a wildlife park external to the programme.

Achilles should still be there though he hasn't been transferred elsewhere.

Archilles is still there. He was mentioned in their social media last month. They’ll hopefully receive a tigress to pair him with in the future. He’s a good looking male, but takes after his mother in appearance and lacks the large ruff Jae Jae has.

Does make me wonder what they can do if they can’t find the cause of Loki illness? As it’s so strange how everything is inconclusive!!
Was At London zoo today… good day great to see animals but also some seem very lonesome.. like the 2 giraffe could do with more land and grass to explore not just concrete!
Zebra look good but again not natural habitat..
Hunting dogs we was so excited to see but such a small space for a wolf like animal..
Two lions fast asleep such a big enclosure but I wonder how much is the exhibit space is used!
It's not concrete, it's a surface developed to promote good foot hygiene and the space is larger than it first looks, having said that, recent changes that have been made could have given them more space and three giraffe display much etter than just two.

TBH: I think ZSL must focus on an concentrate on the neat and extraordinary animals in the animal kingdom. More diversity in terms of smaller species and orders (decent bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and invert collection) with several larger signature species (gorilla, tiger, giraffe, smaller primates (after the Celebes cresteds move to WH and colobus to the Snowdon.

Bulldoze the 2 concrete slab eyesores in the middle of the zoo. Architectural heritage, but animal welfare disasters now, For goodness sake it is a zoo.

I would favour bachelor male giraffe herd going forward, fix up the gorilla family and with silverback, a spruced up Madagascar area with mammals, birds, reptiles, a West African primate focus near gorilla (mangabey, Diana monkey), next to gibbons another langur species silvered leaf f.i.
Whilst the giraffe house is pefectly adequate, I don't think it would be signed off for males now. There are batchelor herds elsewhere, so a repositroy for cows is sensible. You are right, the zoo needs to keep giraffe, okapi, pygmy hippo, zebra, lion, tiger and gorilla; you need some big hitters and then concentrate on interesting small stuff. The new reptile house will be a disappointment for those of us who like the current one and the loss of the aquarium was tragic. The Casson could be used imaginately inside and with decent outdoor enclosures, no need to knock it down; the light in there is amazing and I have long felt that the Mappins could relatively easily be made into a semi mixed African waterhole exhibit; the lower areas are much bigger than they initially look and the mountain bits are not, as I understand it the areas where there are structural issues, all of which can now be approached differently with the aquarium gone.

I'm wondering if Gernot might join similar-aged young males Shufai & Lope at Twycross when their new gorilla exhibits are completed, as bachelor quarters are planned. The problem is it that won't be for a while yet...seems the most logical as if not there, he would need to go abroad possibly.

Yes, I was wondering about that and think it is quite likely if there has been a decision to bring in a silverback.
