ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

thanks! can they move the Casson and the Mappins into the museum? ;-)

I think the Mappins are way beyond any form of redemption now. The obvious (and probably cheaper) outcome would be to knock the whole area down and create some new exhibit space. Of course it’ll never happen, but ZSL seems to be doing a good job of employing a “hands-off” approach and letting it slowly rot!

Why ZSL shut the interior Casson space I’ll never know! There’s some good interior exhibit space to be had there by utilising the old rhino and elephant stables (that the pigs aren’t using) for small mammals (primates?), reptiles or invertebrates. Plus it’s a good space during inclement weather. No doubt it’s probably become an area for the zoo’s unwanted junk much like Whipsnade’s Tecton elephant house has!

The old penguin exhibit makes an appearance in Harry Styles' new music video, at 1:21
Wish they'd used more of whatever footage they shot, the exhibit is perfect for this.

This is the first time I’ve watched a music video by Harry Styles all the way through and all it took was the Lubetkin's Penguin Pool to draw me in. :D

Had that not been the reason for watching, I can only imagine it’s inclusion would have been the most unexpected thing I’d ever seen in a music video!

For his next video, I wonder what the acoustics are like in the Casson Pavilion…:p

I've watched a few of his, but I definitely was not expecting to yell "penguins!" in the middle of one :)

Even though his music isn’t to my taste, I thought he was great in Dunkirk (2017) and think the combination of a British icon with an iconic piece of British zoological architecture is a win-win.

For an exhibit that’s generated much controversy and sat disused for years, it’s surely about to experience a surge in interest from Harry Styles fans in the same way zoo visitors flocked to the reptile house re. Harry Potter.

Just visited the Zoo yesterday during a quick London trip and I noticed the Sulawesi Crested Macaques seemed absent. I checked a few times during the day but there seems to no sign of them. Have they moved to Whipsnade recently? Or was I just unlucky enough not to see any of them during my several peeks at their enclosure

Don’t believe they have moved as we were just saying on the whipsnade thread that we can’t see anywhere for them to go yet. Maybe they have gone off show but seems a bit early? Were their signs up?

I believe there was at least one that I can recall, but there was little sign of the Macaques themselves. Maybe they did go off show, but as you said it seems awfully early for that. Of course there’s obviously the possibility that I somehow simply missed them, but there was no indication of any of them both in their outdoor enclosure and indoor space during the times I checked on them during my visit,so its definitely a strange case

A crested caracara has escaped and is currently in South-West London - roosted on Barnes Common last night.

Looking at twitter, it seems it's been out and about since at least the 16th March

Now back at the zoo as per the zoo's Twitter. :)

ZSL London Zoo on Twitter: "We’re delighted to confirm that Jester the caracara is safely back home at London Zoo, and reunited with her brother Joker. She’s well settled, and enjoyed her homecoming treat of quail. Thanks for all of your support! https://t.co/NrHECNlQVU" / Twitter

FWIW I saw several macaques when I visited on 22 March, but they were mostly at the back of their outdoor space (as viewed from the Gorilla area) and the path at the back was closed off so you couldn’t see them close up. I don’t know if they have a “private” indoor area they can retreat to?
