ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

Animal Adventure is everything past the farm paddocks but before the squirrel monkeys, no? Surely there is still at least a mongoose/porcupine enclosure in addition to the coatis and aviary? Or has that been removed recently?

I haven’t been around the area in a while but there were definitely yellow mongoose there for a while, porcupines might have moved in? Not sure I’ll check next time. Either way not the most interesting area in the zoo species-wise.

Is Nakal still at West Midlands ???

Yes he was transferred 05/01/2016 and remains there to this date. They have a new exhibit planned, which will then enable them to receive a new tigress to pair with him for breeding.

I was told their current female (Hujan) is not expected to breed now given her age. She’s 14 in September and has never bred.

London Zoo had 2 Sumatran tigers, Melatai and JaeJae. Nakal was one of their cubs and was born on 03/02/2014. Thanks to Zoofan15 for providing that information on 25/2/2022.

From recent visit:
Animal Adventures comprises
Conure parrots
Coatis (first group)
Llama and Alpacas
Pigs
Goat Paddock (walk-in)
Kiddies splash zone
toilets and kiddies Changing room
Water refill point
Refreshment kiosk
kids play area (slide)
Small animal Display area ( not used as such currently)
Porcupines (their enclosure was previously two enclosures and in the past the first held yellow mongoose, and in the past the second rock hyrax , then the previous porcupine sisters combined with meerkats , then the two enclosures split between the new porcupines and meerkat but the meerkats have been moved so the now 4 porcupines have both .)
at the top end
Coatis (second group)
Plus one currently empty enclosure which typically used to have one of the owls but was most recently used to house to some squirrel monkeys prior to their transfer to another zoo.

The rabbit enclosure in the entry Courtyard was demolished earlier in the tear and the Courtyard area now has several bench tables with canopies.

Following my first visit to London Zoo in around 15 years. I was only around 10 at the time and the only thing I could remember was the penguin enclosure.

I saw a total of 7 new species; it probably would have been more but I didn't get time to go through the reptile house or the 'Tiny Giants' area. It was quite busy and given the weather (hot) most of the animals were cooling off indoors or in the shade.

When we first arrived the gorillas were all fast asleep; luckily when I went back round the second time they were all outdoors eating. They seem like a very calm group (although that could have just been the weather). Most of the monkey species were active.

Both of the tigers and lion (only saw the male, female must have been somewhere out of sight) were asleep. The African Hunting Dogs were active - I think I counted 6, can anyone confirm how many they have?

The Okapi were separated but were licking and sniffing each other's faces over the fence.

I really enjoyed the Night Life section; I wish I'd had time to go around it twice! I didn't see either Loris species (there was a sign for Pygmy Slow Loris but I didn't see one for the Slender Loris) or the tenrec, but I did get a good view of the Potto, Giant Jumping Rat, Bushbaby and Aye Aye.

The Southern Tamandua was asleep right above the door entering into the rainforest area so we got a good view of them; all 3 sloth were also pretty much on the walkway so we got very close to them too.

I didn't have anything to eat so can't comment on the food but the gift shop was reasonably priced and there was lots in there. So all in all I enjoyed my trip; though I probably won't make it a regular occurrence just because of how far away I live from the zoo!

Been ages since I lasted visited myself. Noticed there was work on the Snowdon aviary. What has it been utilised for as 've heard the birds were relocated.? PS Outside the perimeter of the zoo,on the banks of the Regents canal, right under the aviary,a small colony of Wild Aesculapian snakes lived. Probably died out but where was the source?

Note to anyone visiting the Rainforest Kingdom (which I always try to include on a visit) - It is currently *extremely* hot in there - one of the volunteers informed me that the thermostat system was broken and was set to "fully on" the whole time and the engineers hadn't yet been able to fix it, so with outdoor temperatures in London at 26C yesterday it was sauna-hot inside and I had to leave after a few minutes. (I guess they can't just turn it off and on manually). As @hjkr said above, the Tamandua was draped over a branch right by the entrance door - maybe trying to find a cooler spot?

Hi @hjkr
there are 6 African Hunting Dogs , the males from the litter born in 2015. ( Females from that litter went to Whipsnade).

Thank you - do you know what happened to the parents of the litter? Have they passed away or were they moved on?

Humboldt penguin chicks hatch:

London Zoo penguin chicks named for Platinum Jubilee

Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who became the first Briton to scale Mount Everest in 1953, and another was named Apollo, to mark the moon landing in 1969.

Bobby has been named in honour of former England football captain Bobby Moore, who led the team to World Cup victory in 1966, and Bernie was named after Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web in 1989.

The fifth chick has been named Mac, after Dame Ellen MacArthur, who sailed solo around the world non-stop to set a new world record in 2005.

Visited today, few things of note:
  • Night Life was closed? Disappointing, as I was hoping to spot the Pygmy slow lorises and hedgehog tenrecs for the Global Challenge and since it's my favourite part of the zoo, but oh well. Couldn't get an explanation for why either although there seemed to be a few works going on when I peered down the stairs.
  • The zoo has acquired Mountain peacock pheasants, now displayed in the closest outdoor aviary to the left of the Blackburn Pavilion.
  • Snowdon Aviary looking fantastic - they're very nearly done now with the infrastructure. No vegetation for now though, so interested to see how that works. There appears to be a walkway through the aviary and on the far side a massive wooden building with what appears to be indoor accommodation, plus a few netted exhibits on both sides of the building - the building as a whole feels too large to just house colobus monkeys, so I'm hoping for some birds or small mammals. We'll see though - doesn't seem to be any other aviaries or construction work going on on that side of the canal so I don't reckon there'll be anything more.

Glad to hear its finally nearly complete I hope it works well for them and they can put in a large group of colobus in there. I believe the walk way has always been there since it opened
