ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

They're still pretty young aren't and first came ahead of expectations? If they'd only started coming out in the last couple of weeks you'd maybe expect them to be hidden a lot still.

I saw all the cubs on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. they will have long periods of activity but longer periods of resting which typically will be on the back wall or in the bamboo areas. They are still small enough to be difficult to spot if lying down. As they grow and trample more of the vegetation they will be more visible even when resting.
There are normally ZSL volunteers or a few photographers around who can advise where the cubs were last spotted.

Anyone else worried that I’m outside the tiger territory and again both parents no cubs?! Where could they be without mum? Hope it’s not bad news like the previous cub …
I was at zoo on Friday, the 3 cubs were out and about at 10am, Mum was with them. Mum then went off whilst cubs hid in the undergrowth. Cubs were out playing in the afternoon. So all looks well

Was also at the zoo today, albeit in the afternoon. Didn't get lucky with the cubs but great to hear it confirmed that nothing is wrong. The inoculations should really be around this time if I remember correctly so that might have been why they were off show for a while.

On a side note, went inside the Snowdon for the first time today. Colobus were great, put on a show, a couple of leaps, lots of activity. The issue from my perspective (which can't be helped I guess) is how prescriptive it is. You get max five minutes in there in a group of twenty with two keepers and if there happens to be a colobus on the path you can't go in within ten metres of it. Can't help thinking that such an exhibit in France for example would be much less cautious in its approach, but I suppose those are the conditions imposed upon them due to recent law changes.

The concept of Monkey Valley is great, but it felt extremely anticlimactic; inevitably as you mention, but nonetheless unfortunate. However for the colobus, it is impossible to deny that the enclosure is still brilliant. What other colobus enclosures around the globe are comparable in size and quality?

A question regarding the cubs: has anybody seen them in the main enclosure opposite the Cassons? From personal experience and what I have heard others state, they are more commonly seen in the enclosure with the pond.

Did you notice how the trees were holding up so far?

Can someone tell me, is it the case that on opening until around 10.30am, the twilight world is actually in white light and the lights only go off around 10.30am? I've read posts in the past both here and elsewhere that suggest this, but wondered if anyone can confirm if this is true, or not. Thanks

They were in the main paddock on Friday, playing with each other and then disappearing into the undergrowth

I think think that is the case - I think people have said that the animals were more active at that time but I can’t remember any mention of white light, and certainly in my experience it’s been pretty constant throughout the day as red light. The only variable exhibits are the lotus exhibits which do sometimes switch to a whiter light towards the end of the day, but that is it I believe.

I have seen them with their mother in the area right underneath the upper viewing area, though it was a month ago and their habits may have change since.

Just been perusing Zootierliste and noticed water rats are no longer listed for London. Have they actually gone? I've had a skim through the thread and notice that no-one seems to be mentioning them so I'm fearing the worst...

They have indeed been gone for a good while now - at least a year, if not more. Their exhibit remains vacant for their time being.

Sumatran tiger cubs are in excellent health:

Good to know this litter are confirmed to be healthy and strong, ruling out any speculation of ill health following the death of the pair’s last cub.

London Zoo staff get ‘mega workout’ holding tiger cub triplets for health check

London Zoo staff were pleased to confirm they have a trio of “super strong” Sumatran tigers in their care after the cubs’ first health check.

The triplets were given a clean bill of health after a nose-to-tail examination, including their eyes, heart and weight, as keepers contended with “sharp claws” and “feisty personalities”.
