Well maybe we won't have to wait 8 years for the next...
Possibly not with two other breeding age females-as Jookie's daughter Alika is pretty much mature now. I guess it depends on which ones EEP have recommended they breed from.

I'd assume Effie would have a recommendation too. She's still of age to breed and is arguably more valuable than Mjukee. From what I've read to it's inferred that Mjukee and Effie were mates for Kiburi anyhow.

Alika is nine years of age, so still of reasonable age for her first offspring. But I wouldn't be surprised if they wait another few years before allowing her to conceive, instead prioritising the two older females first.

In case of a repeat of last time (Mjukuu assuming the rearing of Effie’s infant), they may wish to allow Mjukuu a similar timeframe to establish herself in the role of rearing an infant before potentially putting her in the situation of rearing a second alongside her own.

It would be ideal for Alika to observe the raising of her half-sibling, so a year or two delay in breeding from her could well be the plan.

Nowadays they usually like a young female to observe mother-rearing from an older one before allowing her to breed. I personally don't think this is necessary but it may help in occassional instances and seems to be the new mantra. So I suspect they might give Alika a year or two also. Effie's problem is she isn't a great mother. With her strong maternal instinct, Mjukuu partially/mostly raised Gernot .(like having different aged twins) so maybe better if Effie didn't have another baby at the same time as Mjukuu perhaps, to avoid a repeat of that.

.

Better if they could avoid that again perhaps. Maybe not allow a pregnancy from Effie until Mjukuu's baby is well grown, though the previous 'twin' rearing didn't seem harmful to any of them at all. Only further births will show how it pans out.

Out of interest, we talk about genetic importance, how valuable is Gernot to the wider breeding program?
Both Gernot and Alika are quite valuable, as Kumbuka (their father) was one of only 2 offspring of the wild-born male Keke at Belfast that lived long enough to breed. Kumbuka's half-brother, Nasibu, fathered a son at Lisbon who is about the same age as Gernot - but I believe Nasibu is now in a bachelor group at Pairi Daiza.

The Nasibu in Pairi Daiza was born in Frankfurt and came there through Rotterdam. The one you meant is still at Lisbon (as is his son).

 I apologise for this mistake. I will check the unofficial studbook to see if it was my error and I will try to contact the authors if it was theirs.

Yes, the Belfast born Nasibu is still in Lisbon. Genetically on the maternal side he is very valuable too as he and his son Jahari represent w/c female Delilah's only living descendents, so potentially from both sides among the most valuable in Europe. (The other Nasibu at Paira Daiza is Frankfurt-bred from very well represented line).

Just to say I briefly visited on Wednesday afternoon ,The temporary screening barriers that were mentioned and shown in a photograph as being in /around the zebra/ostrich area were no longer present.
The east tunnel (the one by the restaurant/shop ) is indeed now shut with maintenance work ongoing.

A lovely morning at the zoo to see the new baby gorilla. Very sweet and very visible.

The new enclosure in the bird house walkthrough is looking ready for new occupants. Plus, a rather magical moment: one of the blue crowned laughingthrushes landed on my shoulder and dropped a small pebble into my hand. Certainly the best gift I have received this year!

I believe the very friendly blue crowned laughing thrush is called Peanut and she was hand reared at Jersey Zoo. She does enjoy human company

How wonderful! Something any zoochatter would treasure for ever!
