ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2025

Are the exhibits to the left entering Rainforest Life still holding bokyboky? Had a random thought on those enclosures earlier today - as black and rufous sengi are spreading through Europe like wildfire of late, I think those specific exhibits would suit them nicely with a little bit more foliage - they're the right height with regards to visitors and size...

Yes, still holding BokiBoki as of last Monday

It is interesting to me that the Bokys barely use the first 2 sections of that enclosure and almost entirely use the final one - plus, the pair currently in there are staggeringly relaxed both with each other and the public. I've never seen Bokiboky act like they do, and it's all the better for it - somehow they manage to rival the sloths with interest currently. I do wonder if there's any reason the two species couldn't be mixed, with the sengis likely preferring the "forest" parts of the enclosure and the bokys the "scrub" sections. Certainly if London held 2 species of sengi I would be very pleased indeed

Presumably the bokiboky would at least attempt to predate the sengi.

Have the 2 most recent tiger cubs moved on yet or do they still have all 4 tigers? I haven't heard anything about them but they'll be about 3 now. Crispin and Zac.
Thanks!

Zac left for Maubeuge Zoo last year, Crispin is still present, in the enclosure with the lake - but he spends all day in the off-show area next to his parents so he can interact with them. Currently nobody has any idea when he's moving (keepers included) - he was meant to move earlier this year but that's been delayed. The parents, Asim and Gaysha, are still present as well so total population is 2.1

Aw cool thanks for the info!

Today I got to the Rainforest Kingdom to find it closed due to the birth of new baby Saki Monkey!

Just spotted it, staff / volunteers are not allowed to talk about it at the moment due to them having one previously but it not surviving. But the staff and volunteers keep popping in to see it and are very excited.

Unsure if it’s been reported on here, but am at the zoo today and just spotted a baby dik dik :)
Fantastic news that it's out and about - I didn't want to say anything before someone saw it but I had my suspicions when the keeper seemed to be checking on something in the house while feeding them the other day. Hopefully another birth to come as well! That paddock is the perfect spot for them, giving them plenty of peace and quiet. Does anyone know when the 3rd adult (presumably male?) arrived?

Lovely to hear. The recent sloth baby wasn't publically announced for just that reason but hopefully this birth has more luck. Helps fill the gap that the tamandua left

Where are the Dik-Dik kept at London? I wasn't even aware they held them!

They are above the otter enclosure. I noticed yesterday that there is now a flag with their name / photo on flying at the bottom of the ramp up past the back of the otter enclosure / by the mongoose exhibit. They are easily missed by many.

There is also an icon for them on the zoo map, but it may help if they also added their name - would defo make visitors walk up there to find out what a Dik-Dik is if they didn’t know.

The giraffe/zebra/ostrich main enclosure is opened up again to allow full mixing at times.
The macaw aviary now has the Hyacinth in the larger aviary with the Great Green macaw , the younger two Blue-throated seem to have moved back to the offshow aviary by the display lawn that they occupied last year.

I'm so glad to hear that it's open again. I was really worried by the prospect of losing it to the gorilla enclosure extension.

Those Maccoa Ducks are a new species for London, by the way. ZTL only lists six other European holders, so that's really nice news; further evidence of the recent improvements in the zoo's bird department. I've always loved this aviary for its contribution to the geo-theming of GK, but now with these and the nation's only Madagascar Crested Ibis, it's beginning to develop quite the nice lineup too. Did you see any, or gauge roughly how many they have?

As happy as I am to see that it's still open, I must say it's left me even more confused as to where they are actually going to expand the gorilla enclosure in to. I don't see where else there is space in that area...

Apart from the macaque enclosure and I believe current Diana monkey enclosure, the rest of the outsude monkey enclosures are making way for the gorilla/mangaby extension. It’s not really a main enclosure, more a smaller second one to help with group management etc

Kalaw,

the planning documents (accessible by link in the first post of the year in this thread) describe the footprint of the Gorilla extension. Those plans don’t go into any detail about the current access route to the Gorilla exhibit. I imagine the Meet the Neighbours aviary would be impacted by any change to the access route and possible it might be in the area cordoned off to secure the construction site.

The planning application is still showing in the recommendation/commitee stage so the forum post from July that work proper was starting perhaps needed to be qualified.Obviously any work not subject to planning permission can occur and other stuff like compensatory tree planting etc occur.

Speaking of the bird department doing well...

I was just checking ZTL and saw that 1.1 Brahminy Starlings arrived from Waddeson Manor on the 30th June. Has anyone seen these yet or knows whereabouts they're kept? That's the 6th new bird species this year if true.

That makes sense. I thought they were planning on extending the main enclosure as well as creating an additional one where the Dianas and macaques once lived.
