ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2015

Oh wow , is it healthy pup do you know? I did wonder when I visited June 9th and Bailey was apparently resting from the show so only Dominic and the other female took part.

The new pup is called Oscar and you can see him and his Mum on You Tube, looks really healthy and well

Hope you had a great time at Whipsnade, you were fortunate to see the red panda cub, certainly didn't see the cub on Saturday despite spending some time in the area. However, got a really good sight of the sea lion cub, Oscar. He is really coming on well and Mum is very attentive. For anyone visiting Whipsnade, pop along to the Chimpanzees at 5.00pm, different talk just before their bedtime

TripAdvisor has released it's annual list of top zoos: Whipsnade makes the Top 10 for best UK zoos (number 9). However neither it, nor London, make the top 25 list for Europe or World's best.

Obvoiusly one should take these findings with a pinch of salt, but not pleasant reading for ZSL I would imagine.

I think you're right about the pinch of salt!!
The list places Whipsnade below Blackpool and even Folly Farm and Drusillas. Any list that places Axe Valley as 10th in the UK cannot be taken seriously, it's totally pointless!

Let's be honest when looking at the result from Trip Advisor, "Lies, damned lies and statistics" might be a fitting quote

Quite.

However, it should be noted that a lot of organisations, not just zoos, are increasingly taking the work of TripAdvisor very seriously!

Construction on the new elephant barn will begin in September, projected for a May 2016 opening. The concrete hard-standing will be replaced with deep sand.

Visited for the first time in a month or so and just a couple of things I noticed:
There have been 3 further Nilgai births since the twins reported in early June.
The impala numbers seem to have increased to 6, having fallen from 5 to only 3 seen on my last few visits.

On all my visits this year I have only seen three impala; however, on my last visit, on 25th July, I was informed by a member of staff that there are now seven impala.

Hopefully the chances are good that the taxon will still be around whenever I next visit Whipsnade then :) as I am yet to see this species, or the Tommies.

Any sign of the single male Blackbuck being added to the new female group yet?

I only saw females in the paddock next to the Nilgai but the grass is long, so you couldn't see far into it. I didn't go in the drivethrough, so can't confirm that the male is still in there either I'm afraid. He was still there on my previous visit

I think he would have been very visible along with the females if he was in there with them, so I guess not yet.

As some of you might be aware that Jamil the Indian Rhino is no longer at Whipsnade as he has been moved to his new home and life at Fota Wildlife Park in Cork which is in Ireland so I wish him all the best for the future and one day he might be a father to calves at Fota

2 Scimitar-horned oryx and 1 Kudu have recently been born, the Kudu calf being currently offshow due to the over-inquisitive Impala!

Last year's Ring-tailed lemur youngsters are currently being crate-trained for imminent departure.

Work on the new elephant barns begins September, with a projected completion for Easter 2016.

Good news, wattled cranes don't seem to breed that well in zoos and are not doing to well in Africa...
