ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2021

Whipsnade have announced births of a saki monkey and a yak along with the wooley pigs.

Whipsnade have always done well with Saki in recent years, although this is the first birth for some time. IMO it would be nice to give the group a larger, better enclosure than what they’ve currently got. They’ve always seemed a bit overlooked since the Discovery Centre closed.

Couldn't agree more can't remember the last time I saw anyone even looking at there enclosure, not sure it's even has a sign on it anymore.
Hope they do have a plan to move them into a new enclosure at some point.

I was there earlier and they are still signed. A couple of people were looking for the monkeys!

Further to what others have noticed on recent visits, there are now some new enclosures built upon the escarpment for the farm’s excess goat breeds.

Also overheard today was a tentative idea to turn the sealion area into a netted “holding” aviary for the zoo’s demonstration birds. Not sure how I feel about this but my initial reaction was underwhelming indifference. I get that the area is derelict but clearly I’m expecting too much to hope for a complete refurb and new species

At whipsnade today:
1) Ming Jin trying to mount female Donna/Gita wasn’t Having much luck and by afternoon given up but was with Donna Kaylee and I think Lucha all day .. no elephants went to the grass today all on the sand back paddock area... very sad when such a big paddock to explore
2) No meerkats says exhibit empty.. wonder what has happened? Couldn’t find the otters either
3) Longleat ostrich Blue was seen today.. kept alone kept wanting to bite people as that was his only companion... which seemed unfair
4) giraffe looked great.. wouldn’t be surprised if another birth is announced soon
All going well
5) African hunting dogs look so alone with just the 3.. hope they bring in male soon

We were also at Whipsnade too today and were talking about how we havn't seen any elephants NOT in the sand paddock / bull pen for some considerable time. I don't know if it is related to the new bull arriving but it certainly seemed to coincide.

Blue seemed absolutely fine when we saw him - was not attempting to bite anyone.

First time back for us since 2019! Alway loved seeing elephant in open space.. today they seemed crowded in the 4 and 2 setup.. and didn’t allow the female Donna who didn’t want to mate with Mai Jing any space to go.. she was like cornered in!

Some personal highlights from today’s visit:

Warty pigs: very active and lots of personality! Could prove to be a lot of fun if the zoo manage them well.

Yak: again, very active due probably to the new calf but a now a large group that look very much at home now in their paddock rather than in the drive-thru.

Escarpment goat enclosures: very much surprised by these but clever use of a very much compromised area of the zoo even if they’re housing domestics.

Penguins: maybe it was the weather but the exhibit looked excellent. Clean and fresh (as opposed to some areas of the zoo) with a good mixture of fowl, not just penguins. A very large number of African penguins now, certainly the most I’ve ever seen at Whipsnade.

Thanks for this, it is much more upbeat than how I felt today! No need for me to post my usual list of negatives....

@Rosie183 I notice that you did not mention Karishma and her daughter Elizabeth/Lizzie,when discussing Ming-Jung’s attempted mating with Donna, and overall interactions with the other Asian Elephants. Are Karishma and Elizabeth no longer at Whipsnade Zoo?

From what we saw... they are but they were directly behind the old elephant house so you could barely see them... as no one at all had access to the grass all on the sand..

We've visited the last two Mondays and all five of the female elephants were in their large grass paddock

Check out these photos of Blue the Male Ostrich who thinks he's a zebra when he was at Longleat. Here he is

Any idea if young female Giraffe Nuru is going to be moved on from whipsnade? And won’t Khari be moved on too soon before he gets old enough to breed as the other male Jengo moved on at 16 months.. he now 2..
As Nuru can’t breed with her dad Bashu.. and Luna was her age when she had her first calf.. otherwise what is the future of the group

Someone on here did say that an Ostrich was going to London Zoo, in with the Giraffes and Zebras, so wondering once building works are complete, whether this Ostrich is going to be heading down the M1?

Is the Broga still at Whipsinade?
