ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

There are still plenty of positives. Especially with the new meerkat and macaque areas coming.

I know not everyone agrees with me but I honestly believe the zoo is in a good place. I know I will get shut down but the pandemic and brexit are obviously causing more long term problems.

I think there are some good signs - I think it can feel a bit like ZSLs “not london zoo zoo” but there’s always something to find to like on a visit - it pays to be a frequent visitor in my view as with these big animal collections there can be an awful lot to not see on a given day.

The trouble for whipsnade is it is suffering a bit in comparison with the big marker collections (the contrast with say YWP on a visit is pretty stark not that the animals are unhappy or anything just the cash available difference) - but given all the upheaval of the last couple of years I’m interested to see what the next 2 years brings.

I think a lot of plans etc have obviously been put back by the various situations we’ve all faced recently. Not that I’m making it an excuse but it’s brand new territory for everyone.

I honestly believe the future is looking exciting

What were the other positives other than meerkats?

A new reptile house will soon be coming to the zoo. I actually think the Aquarium is a good example of ‘size doesn’t matter’, really interesting exhibits imo.

Did you take a photo of the signs that were indicating aardvark and porcupine? I believe the meerkat area will be merged into the new one.

These are the photos that I took on my visit on Wednesday:

Work has also started on the other part of the old red river hog enclosure and a house is currently being built.

I took part in a keeper for the day experience on Wednesday, and in regards to the tigers, the keeper taking us round said that it is likely the brothers wouldn’t all remain at whipsnade as they would normally split up in the wild. So it makes perfect sense if Dmitri is moving to Woburn.

It was something of a pity not to see aardvark return after the renovation of Animal Adventure at London..
so will be nice to perhaps see them return to ZSL !

future macaque exhibit, new reptile house, new pride of lions (yes I know they will be moving), new female red panda so hopefully breeding can happen and the new cheetahs. I just always prefer to look at the positives
Do you know if any macaques will remain at London Zoo (I had the impression from somewhere on this thread that they were moving them from London to Whipsnade) ?

I believe (could be wrong) that the troop will all be arriving from London to whipsnade

Yes heard the same thing and it chimes with the notes from the reflections update too

Reflections from Whipsnade

2022 will also see us making headway on big projects for 2023, including construction of a new reptile and amphibian experience, and a new home for Sulawesi crested macaques – a glossy-haired, forest-dwelling monkey that will be swinging its way to Whipsnade from London Zoo.
