ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

6 lions, 3 of each gender but unfortunately the zoo has announced lioness Sarabi has been put to sleep. So heading to Whipsnade is father Zero, mother Mo and their now 3 offspring.

How very sad that they have had to put one of the lionesses to sleep because of this situation. What a shame.

Also, slightly off topic, but ZSL have recently released their 2022 annual stocklists. I found a few things worth noting at Whipsnade:
- just one female cheetah left
- the two lynx are both male
- there are now just 1.3 zebra left, so along with the foal, another female has also died recently.
- there are 1.2 warty pigs. There was 1.3 when they arrived
- there is now a male bactrian camel.
- there are just two blackbuck left
- the male gaur is no longer there, leaving three females
- Ashleigh (the bongo), has left, leaving just the male (something I noticed on my last visit)

Also, does anyone know what happened to the wild boar piglets, as the stocklist only lists 1.1?
I don't remember them being old enough to leave the collection.

Yeah, however, I believe there were plans to bring in a female bongo anyway to try to breed with, and also plans for more cheetahs, to restart Whipsnade's impressive breeding record with the species.

In addition to the macaque's and new meerkat enclosure, it isn't all doom and gloom!

Whipsnade just posted some pictures the lions are settled in and can be viewed from today (Thursday).

Will be visiting as usual this weekend. Quite a treat to see them (though sorry for the damage in their home and really sad a lioness was destroyed before the move too). Can reassure their fans back home though that they will get a good welcome!

Its a really good question on the piglets as they were there when the boar moved to their temporary winter home near the bears. But when they came back into the main enclosure the piglets had gone. I had thought they were perhaps still in the winter home.

Quick question but I feel like I’ve read on here that Gaur are being phased out in European zoos? Is that totally correct? Apologise if not

Yeah, since they moved into the winter enclosure, I haven't actually seen the piglets, and they were far to small/young to have been able to live by themselves prior to that. I'll try to ask when I visit at the weekend.

Yes, you are correct, they are being phased out in Europe. And as FBBird said, in favour of the banteng.

Here is their EEP page from the EAZA website that clearly states their phase out: Gaur EEP » EAZA

It's a shame, as they are one of my favourite species at Whipsnade and it would have been great to see a calf.
