ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

You can never have too much space IMO. It’s a fantastic elephant facility as it is, but you can always improve :)

Why not have a gate that leads over the railway and use the land opposite? Maybe the extra housing could be that side as well :)
As the elephant facility is already 'fantastic' I would suggest the rest of the zoo being improved first would be a better idea! Just a suggestion

Here’s a wacky thought: retire the Asians and get ZSL to take Howletts Africans before Damian presses the button! The facility’s already had ample funds in the last few years and, other than expanding the bull paddock, I see no reason why it should get anymore until the rest of the zoo improves. Hippo housing that drains the correct way would be a good start!

Now…where’d I put my medication?

Whipsnade Zoo: Conserving elephants

Interestingly it seems like Whipsnade wants to expand its elephant enclosure:

"We intend to significantly increase their already spacious home by more than tripling the size, and alongside the expansion of their outdoor areas, we’ll create brand new indoor spaces – accommodating a growing herd and allowing us even more opportunity to grow our conservation efforts. "

I would add this press release personally confirms my lingering suspicions: that the keepers requirements and concerns were not listened to at the time during consultations on the last expansion, and ZSL pushed ahead regardless.

So it’s only NOW five years later (when the group’s on a possible downward curve) that ZSL realises that, Yes, we should be spending the money and not cutting corners.

Let’s not forget the original barns were designed to hold rhino. And they’re STILL being used!

I'd agree on improving the rest but I think there is more to do to ensure the elephants don't go into a Whipsnade dwindle :)

Visited on Friday, had another nice time.

I didn’t see anything near the red pandas being built (unless I was being dumb which is highly likely) so I’m not sure what was seen there.

As I posted in the photos, the former vulture/red river hog triangle enclosure next to the new meerkat enclosure is also having work done so perhaps the rumoured porcupines will go there?

The photo I posted of possible new hard standing is nearer the old Dino walkthrough than the red pandas but on the left as you go from otters to the new red panda place. Didn’t check on it last time I was there but will have a look next time.

I’d heard also porcupines for that spit near the meerkat area so maybe indeed!

I’ve just gone back and had a look at the photo you posted, not sure how I managed to miss that tbh!

Are lola and hodor still at the zoo ? They were no where to be seen and all signage removed . Hoover was the only hippo present .

Lola and Hodor are still at the Zoo, happy and doing well; they were splashing around in their pond/lake on Sunday…

Like most animals at Whipsnade, they have off show areas if they’re feeling shy…

Yes I saw them the other day too- just to add that if there’s been a death or animals moving Whipsnade might not say explicitly but they do create redirections on their website at the speed of light that error pages the animals’ info - as their names are still visible there are happy breathing hippos :)

Hippopotamus

The signage at Whipsnade also has to be some of the most abysmal of any zoo in the U.K.! Not a strength. It is a lovely place in many regards but the signs are often outdated, frequently uninformative and mysteriously going and returning.

Was up at Whipsnade today and the ‘cheetahs died’ sign has been replaced with a ‘cheetahs have arrived’ sign so looks like the new boys will be on show soon.
Are they yet visible ? Be good to see cheetah again at whipsnade
