ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

Up at Whipsnade today - very busy but good weather for the animals to be out and about.

Excellent view of the new flamingo chick on the land area at the back of the lake - lots of activity between it and some young moorhens. Looks in good form.

The oryx calf is growing nicely and was running about.

Good sighting of the elephant calf. Ming Jung was out alone in his paddock. The cows were all indoors each time I went by. Karishma and Elizabeth started off at the back and the others with calf in the front section in the same groups as reported above. Later on they had all swapped over as there was an elephant experience going on and Karishma and Elizabeth were being fed. Lots of pushing and shoving to see the new arrival - people ramming pushchairs into each other, kids screaming and weeping and foot stamping as they couldn’t see etc; the usual. By 5 and after until closing though there was plenty of space.

Calf looks lovely.

George is currently living with his half brother, Scott, at the Katowice Zoo in Poland. Since he's not necessarily genetically valuable, it's likely he'll remain here in a bachelor group for years to come.

Maybe it is the same, but in Katowice ZOO there is no George with Scott but his half brother Ned (born 12.04.2010 in Whipsnade). I visit them twice a week, they are all good :)

George and Ned are the same elephant (born 12/04/2010).

Whispnade give their elephants two names - a house name and a media name to avoid the public shouting commands etc.

I’m glad to hear they’re both doing well. George was very special to ZSL given his birth followed a year after the zoo lost two calves to EEHV.

Zootierliste mentions a Royal Python at the zoo. However, this species isn’t mentioned on the website and I don’t remember seeing it (though I could’ve forgotten, it’s been a while since I visited). Where can it be found or is it not viewable? Common in zoos as they may be, I have a soft spot for Royal Pythons.

It is probably off show in the old discovery centre (if they still have it), unless it is in one of the tanks in the butterfly House.

Was up at Whipsnade today and a burrowing owl has joined the bird show. This may be old news but it was the first time I’d seen that particular bird in flight (and going back and forth to the burrow) in the open and it was quite exciting so thought I’d mention it for any owl fans who might visit and haven’t seen her yet.

I must have been to the bird shows with my eyes shut before then :) Glad I’ve seen it now though!
There's a photo in the gallery from 2010 and I enjoyed seeing them in subsequent years. They might have dropped out when the arena housing was upgraded I guess.

Ah yes! I should have checked. Thanks for the correction.

Was thoroughly enjoyable today as you say.

Had one of the most enjoyable afternoons I’ve had up at whipsnade, love this time of year with the autumn sun and cool in the air. All the animals were incredibly active.

Now that the Pere David’s Deer are in the ‘deer’ section of the passage through Asia, it really makes the section look a lot fuller. The horses also look great mixed with the camels.

Saw the baby elephant in the distance and I hope my photos are ok of it. Other highlights was the incredibly active red panda that was running all over the place.

the meerkat/porcupine/aardvark area is, as was previously mentioned, very impressive and it’s good to see them adding more meerkats. Porcupines were a no show but did see the aardvarks in the house. Best part of the afternoon was seeing one of the aardvarks outside and wandering around. First time I’ve ever seen an aardvark awake!

Our baby Asian elephant has a name!

Meet Nang Phaya (pronounced ‘nang-pie-yah')

The not-so-tiny infant has been named the Thai word for ‘Queen’ in honour of ZSL's Royal patron, Queen Elizabeth II, who met the calf’s mum Donna when opening our Centre for Elephant Care.

ZSL conservationists who work in Thailand, protecting endangered, Asian elephants in the wild, chose the name. This animal-related Thai word means ‘queen, or strong, female monarch.’

That’s a lovely name!

Hope she does really well, looking forward to watching her grow up.
