I’ve been keeping an eye on the Bedfordshire planning site and it seems to be taking an absolute age to get the plans for the macaques/anoa and langurs approved.

last time I was there it looked like work had started but this must be so frustrating for the zoo.

It is piglet good news but like you I wonder if they just go to slaughter somewhere for use outside the human food chain (unless they are keeping them on a regimen that’s certified and then sending them to fatten). Brings into question whether they should breed them given they aren’t contributing to a population. I do hope they go to other collections or something but I suspect the worst!

Got to say, I would buy wild boar sausages in the ZSL giftshop...

I’ll let you explain that to the children! :p

Moving this point in a slightly different direction, I’ve always wondered why the zoo wouldn’t sell its hoofstock manure. Surely it would generate a decent profit and also be an interesting talking point down the local allotment!

I know they compost it themselves along with all the wood shavings and used browse, but i don’t see where they use it

Some zoos maybe not whipsnade but probably use dung from let’s say Asian rhinoceros and give it to tigers to make their environment more natural

Most zoos do that sort of thing these days. It's enrichment for them.

Up at Whipsnade today - busy as a school holiday with the ticket offer running but still space for everyone, though it got pretty crowded in the afternoon. At opening time and up to lunch it was actually fairly quiet.

I wanted to see the new hunting dogs and they were out and about which was good to see. One of them was lifting off on the left rear hind / limping but the others waited for it and they all gathered together around it for washing etc - fascinating animals social structure wise. Sure the keepers will be looking after the problem if there is one.

Construction company signs and container site office / storage have appeared near the old sloth bear enclosure and some more of the old structures have been demolished at the end near the cranes, so looks like work could be about to start there. Good progress too on the new bear house. One of the volunteers was telling visitors they were looking for male bears to come in so make of that what you will.

The penguin enclosure netting and supports that were having work done seem to be done.

Is the bear house the ‘holding’ area for the brown bears or another new building for them?

glad a pack sounds to be forming with the hunting dogs! Yeah I’m sure the keepers will keep an eye on it :)

So looking forward to the new area by the old sloth bear enclosure!

The new area is a new house for the bear/s and a wire enclosed / wire roofed paddock that’s a bit like the area at Hamerton with the play pipes and frames in it though that’s open topped, this one has a viewing window at one end. The new structures are being built along the whole side of the current enclosure at the penguin end. It looks like the bears might have two outside areas, the existing one and the space outside the house, depending on how it gets fenced which I guess would help with new bears.

Ah ok I gotcha, I have absolutely no idea how I missed the new house being built. The second outside area definitely looked very smart

Whipsnade Zoo getting new enclosure for critically endangered animals Whipsnade Zoo getting new enclosure for critically endangered animals
Fantastic news, and great use of space. Sounds like a bigger version of Tierpark Berlin's asian exhibit and that is only a good thing.

For some reason I was under the impression the exhibit would be built in the old Sloth Bear enclosure - which makes no sense, given the plans pre-date Colombo's passing. Does anyone know what they're intending to so with that area?

I thought the same in terms of the Tierpark Berlin similarities although that exhibit isn’t completed yet either.
