ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2024

Thanks for your response, very interesting. Never knew they moved offsite, although I do recall them moving to another offshow wooded enclosure on the other side of the bears at some stage. Am I imagining this?

I do also recall them moving around other than to the Gaur house in the past. Hopefully one of the zoochatters with the enclyclopaedic knowledge of the zoo will help us both out here!

The last couple of years they have wintered at the Gaur house, prior to this they spent, if I remember correctly, one winter in the end enclosure by the Bongos. Previously they had been in the area at the other side of the bears until part of it became the new bear enclosure. I believe earlier than that when there were two female wild boar and no male they were moved offsite during the winter to breed.

From what I gather from my visits theirs tension between either Kaylee ( donna mum)!Donna and her calf Nang Phai and Karishma and her calf (Elizabeth)! Unsure why but sometimes they say that this can happen with a group of unrelated females elephants who all want the attention of the male elephant …
and so to relieve tension they are moving Karishma and her daughter to start a new herd in Chester zoo! As Elizabeth is now of breeding Age and one of the females in Chester zoo are the same age as Elizabeth so they hope Karishma can be a leading figure in helping both of them breed in the future!
As in the future it is hoped Donna can have future calf’s and one day Nang Phai will have calf’s so Whipsnade future is quite secure in that respect all being well!

It more so comes down to the fact that the females with dominant personalities tend to have consistent disputes in regards to the who's in charge.

In Matriarchal herds this will usually be the oldest female, ie. the grandmother who leads the herd and makes all the decisions however in captivity in these cases were unrelated females are brought together, they haven't grown up together and so will attempt to push the boundaries and be in charge themselves.
