The monthly mutation list for May lists some interesting births:
- 3 Nubian ibexes (after the first animal born there last year)
- 3 yellow cardinals
- 1 Goodman's mouse lemur
- 38! bernier's teals (of which 19 probably died)
- 21 Meller's ducks (of which 8 probably died)

Hardly any arrivals or departures, though with 3 Baja blue rock lizards leaving, this species could well have left the collection entirely. 28 Madagascar turtle doves died and all but one were used as animal feed throughout the zoo.

I’m other words, those doves were culled to control the population. It’s debatable whether that is better than selling to dealers, giving the surplus animals a chance of life, supporting and expanding the ex situ captive population, and raising funds.

Great news from the Republic of Rwanda! Female Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) Olmoti has become a first time mother! This female was released into the Akagera Nationalpark in 2019, she was originally born in Zoo Zürich.

Great news from the Republic of Rwanda! Female Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) Olmoti has become a first time mother! This female was released into the Akagera Nationalpark in 2019, she was originally born in Zoo Zürich.

Asian Elephant, Ceyla Himali has sadly passed aged 49. She was euthanised Saturday morning after not being able to stand up. She had been suffering a multitude of health issues in recent years.

Her death leaves Zurich with five elephants. They still hope Thai will breed with Ceyla's daughters, Panang and Farha.

A baby Impala is born.
Soon after its birth it encountered an adult female White Rhino but finally it has been left safe.

A new male Andean Bear is due to arrive from Salisbury Zoo in the USA next week. His father was wild born in Ecuador (taken into captivity after being orphaned) so he is a very valuable addition to the EEP

Farha (elephas maximus) is pregnant and will get a calf around april/may 2025.

Wow, European zoos really do do their own thing! If that happened in Australia, the three meerkats would have been sent to another collection. If they did have to euthanise them, they would certainly not be fed to anything, and it probably wouldn't be announced to the public either!

Sending them elsewhere is always the preferred option, but in this case no one wanted 3 older meerkats, so they decided this was the best option available.
