Today the zoo announced that the first (male) Western Madagascar crested ibis (Lophotibis cristata urschi) that hatched outside of Madagascar passed away at the end of 2024. This male (ring number 51685) hatched on the 13th of Juni 2004 in Zoo Zürich during the last 20 years he sired 40 young/grandchildren. He therefore played a vital role in the ex-situ population of this species.

The italian restaurant Dieci which was located next to the main entrance of the zoo has turned into the new Zoo Caffè and Ristorante and belongs now to the zoo. Like the old Zoo Café it is located outside of the zoo so you don't have to buy a ticket to visiting the restaurant. The area of the former Zoo Café has now used for an expansion of the Zoo Shop.


New restaurant:

Yep and completion is scheduled for 2031. Confirmed species are okapi, pygmy hippo, gorilla and drill, with guereza also featuring in the concept art.

The area covers several hectares and it appears we can expect large outdoor enclosures and a large tropical hall with indoor enclosures. They apparently aim to have some 100 trees of 25 meter height which should be accessible for the gorilla. These trees are already grown for the zoo at some breeders.
 
i see that there still be a diverse range of birds since the exhibit seems to have a big indoor hall as well...i seem to remember that at some point they planned to have shoe bills again
