Zürich Zoo Zürich Zoo News 2025

Hello

I will be visiting the Zoo and it's been a few years since my last visit. I was wondering if I could have some information on some species that I haven't photographed yet. How easy (or not) they are to see and perhaps the area of the zoo I may find them. I need some Madagascan species but I would assume they are in the Massoala area.

  • Bali myna (Rothschild's mynah) (Leucopsar rothschildi)
  • Blue-headed quail-dove (Starnoenas cyanocephala)
  • Burmese brow-antlered deer (Myanmar thamin)
  • Common Little bittern (Little bittern) (Ixobrychus minutus)
  • Crested coua (Crested madagascar coucal) (Coua cristata)
  • Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)
  • European bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
  • Lesser white-fronted goose (Anser erythropus)
  • Montserrat oriole (Icterus oberi)
  • Red junglefowl (Gallus gallus)
  • Red siskin (Spinus cucullatus)
  • Swift parrot (Lathamus discolor)
  • Western vasa parrot (Coracopsis vasa drouhardi)

Also are the Goodman's mouse lemur (Microcebus lehilahytsara) ever visible ?

Many thanks for any help on this matter :)

I don't know the zoo well enough to tell you how easy species are to see, but I can tell you whereabouts they're kept, unless of course things have changed since my summer 2023 visit.

- Bali Myna: in the elephant house.
- Blue-headed Quail-dove: aviary in the Exotarium.
- Burmese Brow-antlered Deer: mixed with the camels near 'Mongolian Steppe'
- Little Bittern: free-flight in Masoala.
- Crested Coua: free-flight in Masoala.
- Eurasian Spoonbill: mixed with the bald ibis, shown on the map near 'Panterra.'
- European Bee-eater: free-flight in Masoala
- Lesser White-fronted Goose: not sure*
- Montserrat Oriole: free-flight in the Exotarium
- Red Junglefowl: free-ranging in the elephant house.
- Red Siskin: aviary in the Exotarium
- Swift Parrot: offshow in the Research Centre I think.
- Western Vasa Parrot: free-flight in Masoala

*though ZTL says 'held in the aviary for waterfowl,' which I'd take as meaning the open lake with storks.

Hope this helps, though someone more familiar with Zürich could hopefully provide some more specific information or correct any mistakes.

Bali myna is rather unsure in the Elephant House: I didn't see it in september 2023 and it was not indicated either. And there's the same notification on ZTL for march 2024.

The bali myna is living in the elephant house behind the fake tree trunk. I see them often on my visits (I saw them last sunday). Unfortunately the glass windows to see into the enclosure are really small and only on the ground level so you don‘t see good at the higher levels of the enclosure. But you can see through the mesh of the aviary on one of the end of the tree trunk.
